MG TD TF 1500 - Exhaust Manifold Coating
Who is now recommended for doing the ceramic coating of the exhaust manifolds? I have a few that need very useful treatment. TIA. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Hi Tom, et al, That's a timely subject here right now, I'm investigating the possibilities for Emma's manifold. I remember that Jet Hot has been used by many, and that they do the inside as well as the outside, and have seemed to be the "high priced" spread. I'm expecting a return call this PM from a local powder coater who can (I think) do ceramic as well as hi-temp powder coating, both at higher cost than "plain" powder. I'll let you folks know what I hear re: costs, etc. Al New Bern. NC 54 TF "Emma" |

I've used Jet Hot with good results. |

I used Jet Hot, they did the job and in excellent time. I believe they have more than one grade of coating. Jim |

I have used Calico Coatings in North Carolina to do the manifolds on my TF and TR4A, will use them again on my YB when it is time. |

I used Competative Edge in S. Windsor CT just outside Hartford. Came out great. |

I also used competitive edge,, very happy with the results,, i chose a matte silver, but only 600 miles on it so far I can take a pic if you want Steve |

Tom-- I had mine done 3 years ago by Performance Coatings, 60-37th Street NE, Auburn WA 98002-1716. Phone 253-735-1919, web performancecoatings.com. They offered a variety of colors. At that time the costs was around $120 for the manifold and the retainers. I have nothing but compliments for the service and the work. Larry Kanaster |

Thanks Paul. Jet Hot seems very pricey. Interested to see what your local guy charges. Regards Tim TD12524 |

Tom, As you know the original aluminiumized coatings turned white after use. I guess when new it was a white / silver fleck color I sent mine to Swain since I wanted the original look but with modern technology to help with keeping the bonnet cooler and prevent vapor lock. I don't recall the price. You can call. I did enlarge the bolt holes to the clamps just a tiny bit since they were concerned the .015 thick coating might impact fit. I just found a bit that fit the hole and went up one size to accommodate this. http://swaintech.com/race-coatings/race-coating-descriptions/white-lightning-exhaust-coatings/ Frank TF1414 ![]() |

Frank Cronin's selection of Swain Tech Coatings of Scottsville, NY was a good choice. They provide a wide variety of affordable high-performance coating services. Price Sheet: http://swaintech.com/race-coatings/automotive-coatings/automotive-coatings-price-sheet/ Relatively close shipping proximity to anyone in the Northeast / Upper Midwest. |

Gentlemen, I just got this from SwainTech. Sort of downplayed the appearance aspect. "...We have one coating for exhaust parts which is primarily an external coating called White Lightning. It is an ugly coating which mars easily in normal shipping and handling, can be difficult to keep clean and can change color and appearance when in use. There are times some folks will see spike like growths on the surface of the coating and even times when the outermost layer can fracture. When the look of the coating is important our coating is not a good choice. When maximum heat insulation is important it is a great choice. If you are trying to manage heat and the look of the coating is not critical our coating is a great choice....) Tim TD12524 |

Wow! That's QUITE the downplay on appearance.. |
