MG TD TF 1500 - Finally feel like the rebuild is moving forward

I got all the inside tub work done on my TD rebuild. Tightened all bolts to timbers. plugged widened bolt holes and redrilled them. Straightened the middle panel where the tunnel cover attaches.

And today, it got a nice coat of black primer.

So tomorrow, I get to turn it over and start sanding the outside of the tub. Yea.

Oh, and the items on the back wood are covering the marking someone at the factory added into the paint. It has 24/Tues. and the initials SP. It appears the body was built on Tuesday October 24 1950, and the car was finished on Wednesday Nov. 1 1950. I wanted to preserve the writing.

I found a great fast way to strip the paint off. I used a stripping disk on my mini grinder. I did both sides of the tub down to bare metal in around two hours with one disk.

These run around $30 for 5.

Here is what the tub looks like

What I used also Bruce, does a wonderful job! PJ

Looks great Bruce.

But be prepared for the next slow down stage, painting.

My one big suggestion is to block sand everything and in doing so wet the entire area you can see often like it would be after painting the top coat. Look at it from every angle while wet. You will be amazed at the little bumps and dimples that show up.

Thanks Chris.

Actually have a friend that does metal finishing. He can straighten a car without an filler at all. One of the tricks is a body file that you run over the bare metal. It makes the imperfections stand right out. Then just lite tapping with body tools to bring out the impression.

I also use feather fill. This is a paint-like product that you spray on. It is basically liquid filler.

BTW. It was interesting to find that the factory used lead on the triangular edges of the cowl and also on the indents on the tub back door opening.

I also found that the car must have been in a minor accident some time in the past. There is an area of lead on the panel between the rear inner fender well and the driver door.

It's a nice feeling isn't it?

I sure do and a lot of people on this board who've helped and encouraged me on my LONG journey for TF1414.

Keep posting the pics of your progress. This car is going to POP when it's done knowing the exterior/interior color you've chosen.

Also on the top of the doors at the front with the lip.

Correct Chris. I found the door lead today while stripping the paint off. Not surprizing. Pretty much all car manufacturers used lead well into the 1990's and probably later.

I actuall have all the tools and material to do leading. My brother and I are going to use a little of it to work on the tub door edges. The stripper pad dug a bit into that area.

It is obviously something to be careful of. Organic respirator is a must.

BTW. I took the door wood out of one door. From the looks of the outside, I expected to find a lot of issues. But it turned out that the timbers are in reasonably good shape. There was also remarkably minimal rust (surface) under the timbers.

I sanded them and used my two part epoxy filler to mold a few areas that had split off due to screws and filled in all the old screw and nail holes. Should go back together fine. Hopefully the other is in as good a shape.

T nuts are there.
