MG TD TF 1500 - Finish on side curtain brackets?
What finish was originally applied to the brackets that accept the rear lug on the rear side curtains? When I stripped mine, they looked like they were blued, like gun bluing. The lug on the side curtain didn't pick up paint from the inside of the bracket, so I doubt that they were painted. Don't know if bluing would give long term rust protection. How should I finish the brackets? Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 ![]() |

Body color. I think you're seeing work from a previous restoration. Frank TF 1414 ![]() |

They could have been blued but as Frank said they got sprayed with the rest of the car. |

Lonnie. On the TDs ...Black primer when the tubs were sprayed prior to topcoating. Then overspray when final color was applied. I’m presume TFs followed the same processes Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

Can you tell what the finish was on the inside of the bracket that traps the lug on the side curtain? Lonnie TF7211 |

Mine are rusty so I assume they were bare metal when installed prior to priming. With the insertion of the side curtain I’d imagine if paint had been present beyond any black primer or color overspray it would have been scratched off. Since it would generally have been hid in shadow, black would be less noticeable if you wanted to cover it. Epoxy primer would both seal and be the most durable finish. |

Mine were steel with surface rust. They were very simple construction so I made up new ones from stainless steel but aluminium would probably do. If you retain the original ones electro plating is the only treatment that will not scratch off. No one does cadmium any more and I had the bonnet catches zinc plated about three year ago. They are still perfect. Jan T |
