MG TD TF 1500 - Finishing off welting
Does anyone have a picture of the proper way to finish off the end of a piece of vinyl upholstery welting/beading? |

I don't have a photo, but I traditionally rip the stitching back about an inch. Then turn the raw edge back under and restitch. |

From Chris's gallery, the only folds were for the piping along the running board. The rear piping was cut square. I think LaVern had posted some pictures of the fold at the rear fender to the running board, but I can't find them in the archive. Image 74 Shows the straight cut piping at the back of the rear fender. https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtd/Pictures/TD11272/Thumbnails/mgtd_gallery_thm_TD11272.htm |

This is an original piece of piping from the front valance of the TD 1250. It has been painted over black at one time but was unaltered otherwise. Of note here is the piece only runs the length of the top and does not drop down over the front as seen in pictures of later cars so I believe that was a process that was changed at some point in production.

This is what the folded ends look like on this piece,

This is an original piece between the fender/tub and running board. The fold shown is as it would be finished when in place on the car.

Another picture of the finished end. Of note is the nail hole where it fixed into the tub. The second image shows the unfolded end and gives you the length back to the piping cord inside. While on the subject of the cord, it should be noted that on this car the piping cord on the fender and the front valance is the same size and the front is not a smaller diameter as many believe.

The fist image gives you the width of the fold. The second image shows the two pieces from the rear fenders and as mentioned above the ends were just straight cut on both ends with no folds. I'm still waiting for the front fenders and running boards to get back to me to mount on the car but much like the interior piping I suspect that the end folds will be difficult due to the thicker vinyl material from the supplier. Thats about all I have. ![]() ![]() |
