MG TD TF 1500 - First motion shaft seal / rear drums

Does anyone know what seal is used for the first motion shaft in the bell housing? Are they available at local autoparts stores, Amazon or Ebay? Moss' are on backorder.

It's the last piece I need to finish rebuilding my transmission. A friend was kind enough to loan me one to finish the season and I like to return it soon.

I broke the end of the main shaft off in the first motion shaft. Other than occasionally popping out of gear, I made it through two race weekends without knowing. I have photos of the broken bits if anyone's interested.

Also, does anyone have a set of later, one-piece rear drums they'd like to sell?

Thanks

How about a picture? George

Here's the main shaft next to a good one. I had to file the flats you see in order to get the gear over the mushroomed end.

Kurt, What do you believe caused that damage? Are there other gear parts involved ?
Richard Cameron

Richard,

Besides the main and first motion shafts, I lost a tooth from third gear and the brass synchro's on the 3/4 sliding hub came free from the hub. I couldn't find the missing tooth and I think the sliding hub got overheated from the broken ends of the main shaft running together.

As to the cause, I'm not sure. My car is a dedicated race car with over 120hp and open exhaust so I never heard any strange noises. It started popping out of second and fourth when I lifted off the throttle and eventually got so bad I couldn't get it into second at all. I started pulling the gearbox when I discovered the nut on the output flange was loose and the cotter pin sheared off. Since I had a race the next morning, I just tightened the nut and put it back together. I raced the next day and the following weekend with no trouble.

So, I don't know if the output nut came loose and allowed the shafts to bind together and break or, the shaft broke and caused the output nut to loose torque.

Thoughts anyone?
