MG TD TF 1500 - Fixing the gearbox - not the usual way
While I'm learning about our cars I found something is different from the original. So I show a picture and later I'll have a question.![]() |

Here is a detailed picture. Has there been something at the gearbox which is absent (eyelet, broke off)?

It appears that someone cut the rear mount off. They are repairable, here's a picture of a repair from the archives, under "Trans tail housing repair or?" PJ![]() |

I was kinda surprised that they cut the tabs off the sides on Bela's transmission. He might have to get another tail case to make it right. I have seen them on ebay once in a while. PJ |

Thank you both for the pictures. The next time I have to live with that situation - it works. If I need a "new" gear box I will look at the mounts. |

Bela, It looks like the bolts are perpendicular to the frame. Do they only hold the "rubber" mounts to the frame?? Or are the they actually threaded rod that goes into the trannie? How are the rubber mounts held in place to the trannie ?? Steve |

I am yet to get to the gearbox stage of rebuilding my TD which is in lots of bits. I saw this thread and decided to check the pictures of my gearbox - looks just the same with the eyelet/web broken off. So, many thanks for the solution shown I will also have to drill across the remaining webs to modify the fixing down mechanism. ![]() |

"Breaks that often"? The cars are 70 years old...no telling the abuse they have suffered at the hands of well meaning, but inept "mechanics". Seems a bit harsh to totally trash the engineers of these cars. When you consider the numbers produced this does not seem like the failure rate is that extreme. My opinion only. Regards, tom |

I have exactly the same problem with my Y type discovered last night, the grey matter worked overtime during the night and I came to Declan's solution but further thought I can see one or two refinements, I will post if successfull. |
