MG TD TF 1500 - Floor Replacement to TF
G'day all, well the T9 5-speed in my TF is a joy, but now it's time to finish the job! The floor boards are the original items and are decidedly "tatty"! Well past their retirement age. I plan to make new ones myself (a winter project), but am seeking information and experiences from you TD/TF guys on what is the best wood to use. Eg, treated marine ply, how many ply, etc. Would appreciate your advise. Kev Simonsen TF6288 |

If you want to stick to the original, 3/8 Baltic Birch or if that's not necessary to your needs, a quality 3/8 Marine ply will do the job just as well. I have a High Gear T9 5 speed in my TF and only had to trim a slight amount off the driver's side floorboard to keep it from rubbing on the new transmission. Kind of a trial and error fit. The V notch on the right board for the stock speedo cable is not needed. PJ |

Thanks for your words, guys. As stated, my boards are well past it. Paul, the T9 gearbox check & top-up plug is level with the pax side floor board, so not possible to access the allen key! Thanks for the thickness dimension too. For some reason (old timers disease), I focused on the ply number! By the way, it is amazing what new tyres do to improve the ride. Kev S TF6288 |

I used phenolic plywood and sealed the edges. It will outlast me and probably the next owner too. It is really tough stuff and does not require painting. Regards Declan |

Kev, the small amount I removed from the driver's side floorboard was just enough for me to get the Allen wrench in from under the car. If your car is right-hand drive it more than likely will have different adjustment requirements that I'm not aware of. PJ |

Thanks Paul, thank you Declan. No issues with clearances whether LHD or RHD. Where the speedo cable exits the extension housing the floor had been brutally "modified" by a PO! Being hidden under the carpet, this had been conveniently forgotten (my bad). But you have given me the kick start I needed. Off to the hardware shop now. Cheers Kev S TF6288 |

An interesting thread, thank you Kevin. This is an issue that I will need to consider, when I do my T9 conversion later this year. The flooring in my car, like the rest of the woodwork was replaced when the original restorer completed the car some years back. Maurie Prior |
