MG TD TF 1500 - Found a Squeek

I have put all of 32 Miles on the TD. I keep searching for things that need tightening or correcting before I take a "Big" trip.

We are still having 50 degree (F) days here in North NJ so when ever possible I take here out, if only to the drug store or Lunch at the local Diner.

I developed a squeak, It seemed to be in the rear axle area. I had my daughter find it while I bounced the car.

The right rear brake line was rubbing on the Check Strap 266-430.

I looked at some of Chris' photos and my brake line should be way further back than it is.

I corrected it somewhat. Squeak is now gone.

Oh! Happy Thanksgiving

Jim.
Thats a lot of rubbing! Please make sure that the brake line is not ready to leak or break !!!!!

I did just that when I re-formed it.

Thanks Steve.

Jim I'd recommend replacing that section of line just to be on the safe side. I totally lost my brakes when unbeknownst to me the line had been rubbing on the side curtain box. The wall section had been reduced just enough to weaken it. The blow out occurred during a heavier than usual brake application. Cheers

Shouldn't that brake line be *inside* the check strap and strapped tightly on top of the axle tube? It would seem that would be the best place to prevent future damage.
Kevin McLemore

Kevin the original location was to the rear of both the check strap & the axle tube. On top wasn't recommended. The illustrations in the Driver's Handbook show glimpses of the route including the path which is shown on the illustrated lubrication chart at the end of the publication. It does hug the rear of the axle except where it goes rearward around the strap then returns again to the axle. This is the path that I used when replacing my lines with Cunifer. Cheers

It is mandatory here in New South Wales that before you are issued with a car registration, should the car have not been or had been de-registered for some time it is necessary to obtain a "blue slip". This is an in depth inspection of the vehicle. I had my rear brake lines outside of the check strap to the rear, however, I was made to remove it to run inside of the check strap on top of the axle other wise it would not pass registration. Who was I to argue.

On top of the axle where it could be thumped by the rubber stop? I would have been tempted to find another mechanic.

I'm with Peter on this one.

Replace the line and re-route it correctly.

Brakes and tires are what keep you on the road and keep you safe...

Frank Cronin

I totally agree Matthew. This pic is the work of a restorer here in NSW. There is no way I'd follow this route for the reason you've stated. I took this pic to illustrate what not to do. This restoration also included copper lines, yet another no no here in NSW. Cheers

There are some good pics of how it should be done on Dave Braun's website - davebraun99.com - under restoration of his TD.

Only squeak I had was the purse strings from the wife.

OK OK some body had to say it.

Peter, can you draw a diagram of how the "clip" retains the brake line please.

I am fitting a new rear axle and have ordered new clips, would like to add them once and properly.

I have read a description and an having trouble understanding it.

TIA,

Peter

They certainly aren't meant to be used the way you would immediately think to use them, that is for sure. The tongue (narrow end) wraps around the brake pipe then goes through the rectangular hole, then round the chassis member and back up through the other end of the rectangular hole, then folded back on itself (I think!).

There is a picture of how the line is routed on "The Original MGTD Gallery" TD27489.

My lines, except front left to hose, are original to the car but were removed around 1968 and shipped from FL to MA to PA to WI before being reinstalled. The original bends are not there on some.

I did get back under and looked at the line with a Mirror. There is a little scuffing, not much but perhaps enough to remove the plating.

I will order a new line ASAP.

Hi Peter. You're absolutely right about the clips. As Dave says they are definitely counter-intuitive. I had them installed incorrectly until someone here pointed this out. I'm 8 klm away from the car so can't confirm Dave's method. The pic attached from my gallery shows the incorrect method. I've since reversed them & replaced the copper. Cheers

Matthew I didn't place the pipe exactly on top of the axle I placed it to the side so it would miss the bump stop and all is good.
