MG TD TF 1500 - front brake drum removal

the drums will not come off either of the front axles on my 54 TF. I did a frame off restoration a few years ago (with much help from members on this website) and want to check the slave cylinders and pads. the adjusters are backed all the way out. I don't think there are enough miles on the drums(since restoration) to have ridges. The cotter pin is removed and the axle nut and washer also removed. I tried a wheel puller but didn't want to force anything. I cannot remember using a wheel puller on the front drums during restoration. the rear drums were rusted to the splines before restoration, they are now well greased and came off with no difficulty. Any suggestions?

I back off the adjusters and knock them off carefully with a block of wood and mallet. I have never used a puller or done any damage to the drums.

Mike, get a wheel puller that pulls on the lug nuts and let it do its thing. Bud

Thank for the quick responses. I tried again with slightly more force and both drums came off easily with no problems.

Does your TF have wire wheel drums or disc wheel drums?
If wire wheels, you should not need a drum puller. I use a rubber mallet and tap tap tap around the drums from behind to loosen it.

The drums are not overly tight but you really should use a puller. Universal ones are inexpensive and there is no need for a heavy duty one. BUT either make certain the jacking screw on the puller has a conical end and this engages in the centre hole on the stub axle. If the screw has a square end slacken but don't remove the stub axle nut and pull the drum off against this. It is very easy to damage the thread on the stub axle. I know - anyone want to borrow a LH die to clean their thread!

thanks for responding. Once I started with the wheel puller, slowly, the drums came off easily.
