MG TD TF 1500 - Front bumper license plate holes

Always learning.

I ordered a set of bumper skins for the TD from NTG in the UK. Their prices are much lower than in the US even with shipping. I have been working with them throughout my TD restoration.

I forgot that the British license plate is wider than the US plates.

The holes in this bumper are drilled at a width to be used for British Plates.

My option is to buy another front bumper, drill new holes or find/build a backing plate that fits the holes, and mount my plate to it.

Any of the British or Australian owners have a source for a black metal license plate backing plate?

Will this work?

Maybe the backing plate and
move the license to one side and then an MG Medallion to help fill up the space. Just so it looks like it was on purpose.

Joe. Thanks. Yes, that is what I need.

Chris Cooper and I have been having a discussion on if on the TD from the factory did they have two different bumpers. One for the US and one for countries that use the longer license plate.

I know my old aftermarket bumpers had holes for the US Plate.

For those of you that have barn finds or truly original T's, did it come with the holes for the US PLate?
Bruce Cunha

I bought my car in 1957. No, the bumper didn't come with holes for US plates. The backing plate has brackets as shown by the arrows. Holes had to be drilled in the backing plate to hold US plates.

Original bumper to my car has widely spaced holes. TD10835. George

Thanks George. That confirms that they came from the UK with the wide bracket holes. Afermarket bumpers in the US did have narrow holes. The one I am replacing has the US plate holes.
Bruce Cunha

Bruce,

The brackets go behind the bumper I believe.

I am not using mine as I have an Antique license plate for 1955, which in NY was a single (rear) plate year.

I used to have a front plate and mounted the brackets behind.
