MG TD TF 1500 - Front suspension trunions, removal

I attempted to remove the LH upper front suspension trunion from the swivel pin to fit new rubber seals. Detached from the forked arm of the damper and removed the bushing which tapped out with light blows from a hammer against a socket. Understanding the LH side has LH threads I was only able to turn the trunion enough, with considerable effort, to expose about 6 threads before is simply seized up and refused to completely unscrew although there was no shortage of grease present. Can't understand why as I have done a similar job on the upper and lower trunions on a Morris Minor many times with no such problems. Is there some trick I'm missing here. Did not even attempt the lower trunion at this point. It is possible this suspension has never been apart since 1951.

You must remove the bushing prior to trying to turn the trunion.

Thanks, I may be confusing the distance tube with the bushing. The distance piece tapped out easily. Removing and refitting the bushing may be beyond what I can do in my garage so may take the entire swivel pin assembly off the car and have my British car shop complete that part of the work on the bench.

John,
There is a hole cut into the bushing (F) so it will miss the threads and should be easily unscrewed form the king pin. So long as you have the distance piece out (E) nothing should foul the king pin.

Just make sure when they press the new bushing back into the trunion, they line up the hole correctly or it will prevent the trunion form going back on.

Don't force anything.

Thanks, Rod. There is something strange going on here as I do have the distance piece (E in the WSM and your image) out and still the trunion will not unscrew more than about 6 threads. I do not intend to remove the bushing. My goal is only to replace the perished seals on the king pin top and bottom.

Make sure it is actually unscrewing, as possible it could be from the wrong side, and RH vs LH thread, etc. If it is, just soak in penetrating oil and keep working back and forth.
George Butz

I had the same problem. Turned out it was just gummed up. I did what George suggests and it finally came off.

Looks like I don't know my distance tube from my bushings.
Sorry for the wrong info.
Just remember that forgetfullness is the SECOND SIGN OF OLD AGE.

I tackled the RH side today and all went according to plan. Both trunnions unscrewed with ease and no wear found. Will go back to the LH side next week and soak in penetrating oil with the zerk fitting removed. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I did the previously recalcitrant LH upper trunnion today and George Butz's suggestion was dead on. Some PB Blaster down the grease fitting hole and working it back and forth did the trick. Thanks for all the suggestions.
