MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel tank bolt ?

Can anybody throw light on the bolt shown in this picture near to the filler cap on my MG TD restoration project

Is it something to do with a locking mechanism or otherwise ?

M PASCOE

I don't have one on mine... Looks like a snap on connection for a tonneau or top maybe? Hard to see in the pic... Don't think it was a good idea...
Geoffrey M Baker

It wasn't put there at the factory. Bud

It isn't original. I think Geoffrey is correct that it is a lift the dot fastener stud and it should be removed and welded shut.

The fuel cap release lever doesn't look original either with the hole.

With the close proximity of the hole on the lever and the stud on the tank, perhaps the previous owner was trying to....? I give up. I have no clue....

Just maybe it was some sort of attempt to secure the gas cap from gas stealing.
F. Driver

Agreed. Its probably some kind of security fixing.

Frank, I have heard many stories of welding of fuel tanks ending in disaster. Please take great care if considering this solution.

Sorry Frank, I addressed the last comment incorrectly. It was meant to be addressed to M Pascoe.

Yup, I'll bet that there was a short strap attached to the lever, with a LTD on the other end !

Steve I have no idea what a LTD is ?

"Lift The Dot" ... as used on the tonneau

Cheap fix looks like ****. Remove it and fill the hole with soft solder, you wont go boom.
G Evans

Since your restoring the car, why not pull the tank, which should probably be done anyway as you can't paint behind it while mounted, drain it, clean it internally and then repair the hole. That's also a good time to check for pin holes and line it if needed. PJ

Yes I will remove the tank in any case and a solder repair would seem a good answer
Thanks Mel.
