MG TD TF 1500 - Gas Tank

Had to remove my already installed gas tank when I received the side panels from the painter. The holes didn’t line up with the nuts on the sides of the tank. The panels are original while the tank is a new stainless one. There is going to be some surgery involved, but I think we have it worked out.

The tank itself never fit all that well on the car. So I have two questions.

Is there a procedure for mounting the tank?

Where are the rubber pads on the bottom of the tank mounted? I had them where the frame rails touch the tank. I seem to remember, though, that the original pads rested on the frame rails and bent around to the sides of the rails. Those from the supplier were not bent or large enough to be bent around to the side, though.

Boy, a few pictures would sure help.

I know we have one original mounting rubber with ours Bill - I’ll have a look on Thursday when I’m in the workshop and take some pics for you.

If memory prevails I think the rubber is mounted to the frame rails and secured with bifercated rivets.

What was the issue with the panels?

The rubber goes over the frame between the two supports that the fender bolts onto. The picture is one I found on the internet.

As this topic of fitting the fuel tank has come up a few times, I was wondering if anyone has the exact thickness that the original frame rubber pad was?

I Wil measure my original rear fuel tank bracket rubber and report that thickness.

Having the original thicknesses will help determine if replacements are correct.

Bruce, the holes in the panels did not line up with the bolts welded to the sides of the tank. If the holes were aligned, the lip of the panels would not fit over the sides of the tank.

From memory alone I think the thickness is about 1/4". The pad was long enough to fold down ove the frame sides. The bracket on the tank helped fold them down. They were also rivited to the frame

Here's a picture of an original pad on my car. The red arrow shows where the rivet hole in the frame is. I didn't measure the pad thickness but it looks maybe a little over 1/4 inch. I don't remember any particular difficulty when I installed a new Moss pad.

Here are my pics of the one original pad we have Bill.

Not sure if it had more of a bend to it originally, and I assume this helps to stop it from moving around.

Just what I needed......

Did you come up with a solution to your panel issue? I made the round T but used on the tank in 1/4 BSF.
I can lathe out some more if you want to glue them in where the holes align.
Bruce Cunha

Thanks, Bruce...the guy who did some of my body work is working on the problem. I will check in with him and see what he has figured out....
