MG TD TF 1500 - Gas Tank End units - Unpainted?

Has anyone not painted the end units for their TF gas tank and if so, how did/does it look? Picture?
J Ostergren

I have seen quite a few over the years on ebay unpainted. Don't care for the look myself.

The original combination of paint and chrome looks terrific and can't be improved upon IMHO. Cheers

In chroming the end panels originally, only the edge was done with any attention and care; the rest of the panel is pretty weakly chromed. IF you want to run without paint, you will need to be sure that the entire panels are properly chromed, or have them done.

Perhaps non traditional. I also have painted wheels. Chrome adds some bling.

Sorry for the poor picture; best I could do. It is getting dark with snow falling.

Painted wheels?

D. Sander

Originally just the flat was left chrome, the bead of the end panel was painted. Most reprints/restorations leave the bead and the flat chrome, only painting the flat plane of the end panel. Here is an original, unrestored car.

Yes, I've been running fully chromed end covers for 40 years. When they were rechromed I just couldn't come to painting over good chrome so left them fully chrome.

John,
Same here and I like it.

I did mine like so, looks nice with the exposed chrome edging and painted flat. PJ

Mine are totally chromed, somebody before me did it.

Going to stay that way, I want to drive it, not win a prize.

Every time I get out of that car I have a smile on my face that would take a mortician to remove!

Thanks all for the comments and pictures. My long story is I finished a complete restoration, or so I thought, about 6 years ago. I took all the pieces to get painted to a painter and when I got it all together I noticed the gas tank end plates were missing. Found them somewhere but never had them painted so they have not been on the car. I have finally decided to finish the job but need to get a little bit of paint (Autumn Red) to get it done which made me think about leaving them unpainted. Chrome doesn't look to bad but I'm thinking I like the painted look better. At this moment not sure which way I will go but again thanks for all your input. This BB is great and I still monitor it all the time. John

I took my end covers to the chromer asking for only the lips to be chromed. He did them entirely.
When it came time to paint I had the painter carefully sand the inner sides and mask the edges. So far they are good.

I might note that at one time Moss sold SS Engine turned side panels for this location. They used the same pattern as I have on the dash.
While I like the dash I thought the sides were too much BLING.

PS (My wife has issues seeing with the dash.)
