MG TD TF 1500 - Gas Tank T-Nuts

How are the T-nuts attached to the gas tank that hold the end panels? I don't see any indication that they were welded on.

I need to weld a shop-made 1/4 BSF T-nut onto a damaged T-nut that I will shorten to accept the shop-made T-nut. Won't work if the original ones were soldered on.

Thanks,

Could they be soldered?

Lonnie. I snapped part of a T nut off of dads fuel tank. It did not appear to be soldered. It may have been electrically bonded ( like a giant spot weld ). I can’t say for sure but there isn’t any indication from the purchase that broke that solder was involved. I’m
Actually going to do a little more sleuthing today as there was a considerable amount of build up at the base of the hole. Whether it was simply paint and ir solder I won’t know until I try to scrape some of it off. I am going to make up some JB weld to attach the remnant of the original T nut back onto the tank.

Four things may have contributed to the T nut failure;
1) the base of the hole had had a build up of paint / or bonding agent
2) the felt buffer padding behind the side panel was too thick
3) the T nut may have only been partially bonded originally
4) the reproduction fasteners are slightly too long causing stress on the T nut when the threads bottom out. ( make sure to use a flat washer and a lock washer and /or remove the necessary amount of thread needed from the bolt to prevent bottoming).

Trial fit all fasteners prior to final fitting.

Thanks guys. I designed an easy-to-make T-nut that will be welded to the base of the original T-nut. Doing for a friend's damaged T-nut on his TF tank. Need to know if the original will detach when the hot weld hits it.

Bill - if your original one came off, then I'm a little scared that it was attached by some method other than welding. Maybe my friend can attach the shop-made T-nut with J.B. Weld, like you are doing.

Please let me know what you find.

Bill, did I give you one of the ones I made? I could not figure how they were attached. I suspect they were spot-welded onto the tank end prior to the tank being assembled.

Lonnie. I just lathed one and tapped it for BSF. The one on my car had been buggered up. I ended up filling it with solder and retapping it. If I did not give both to Bill, I may have one in the shop.

Thanks for your offer Bruce,

I'll check with my friend.

I tried filling an SAE T-nut with solder, then tapping it a few years ago ... wasn't successful.

Could you work a heli-coil into the t-nut?

Tom,

I don't think that the original T-nut on the tank is thick enough to bore for a helicoil. Plus, danger of boring too deep and puncturing the tank.
