MG TD TF 1500 - gauge repair

I could use a few recommendations for gauge repair on Td1275. The temp gauge stopped working midway through a drive for no apparent reason. MoMa fixed it last time but their turnaround time and price, plus the fact I had to resend them the gauge to fix it again before is not an option. Thanks

Nisonger instruments.

Perhaps. They did a great job on my tack and speedo.

I vote for Nissoner as well, my TD speedo was done well and calibrated. Turn around time was pretty reasonable.

The capillary type usually fail because they have developed a leak. The bulb normally contains a few ccs of diethyl ether, but if the capillary is damaged it escapes rapidly as it is so volatile. With care you can fix it yourself if you can solder, but you need to find a source for a small amount of diethyl ether. Its both very inflammable and very volatile, so take care, but you are dealing with a very small quantity. Find the leak and solder it closed unless in a convenient place to squirt in the ether with a syringe (enough to part fill the bulb only), if not you have to make another hole and solder that afterwards. Place the bulb containing ether in a bowl of iced water, whilst soldering up the fill hole. Afterwards test in hot water.

Not sure where in California you are, but one of the well known rebuilders is in Reseda. West Valley Instruments.

The latest issue of 'Moss Motoring', Issue 2, 2018 arrived yesterday. It has an excellent article on the how and why of our temperature gauges. And -- a set of directions on how to repair one.
I've done it myself in the past. Simplest fix just requires buying the cheapest gauge of this type and splicing it onto the problem gauge. Or, google it and find the article written about fixing ones in old Plymouths. Bud

See http://www.ply33.com/Repair/tempgauge . I wrote a DIY article on this and have a whole bunch of images on it, but I can't find the text. Bud

Nisonger did a great job on my TF speedo. They recalibrated it accurately after my rear end gear ratio change. Recommended.

I am happy to hear West Valley Instruments is still in business. They did some repair for me decades ago.

Yeah they're still around. Morris still wanders all the British car shows and swap meets looking for cores and handing out business cards.

Nisonger did a great job on my TF temp gauge. Seemed reasonable priced and turn around, as I recall.

I have used John Wolf and Company in Willoughby, Ohio. Very professional and excellent service and price.

Will work better I think.

My recent experience with John Wolf and Company showed that he is technically very knowledgeable, but is very lacking in customer relations. Be absolutely certain that he knows what you want done to your instrument. He has difficulty with the concept of the use of a correction gearbox, e.g., the one from Declan that I can no longer use. Sorry, Lew, but such was my experience. Bud

Thanks for all the responses. I called Nisonger and he had a fair price and decent turnaround. I was bailed out by my good friend, Bill Chasser, who had a spare he wasn't using.

No apologies necessary, Bud. I spoke directly with the technician doing the repair and refill of my temp gauge. He told me exactly what was to be done and gave me a timeframe and a close estimate of cost. They lived up to everything they promised.
What more could I have asked?

By the way, this was on an 80+ year old temp gauge from my PA.

Keith. Glad I was able to help out and your car is back to humming down the road with that new five speed. I won’t make the Dixon All Bristish Field Meet today due to another respiratory illness. If it progresses any further I’ll be back in the hospital. Fingers crossed
