MG TD TF 1500 - Gear box dipstick/filler cover piece

The carpet that covers my gearbox has no hole cut for the dipstick/filler cover piece, so I thought I would fix that. Someone had said I just needed to glue carpet to the existing cover (covered in blue vinyl) and cut a hole in the existing carpet and presto! another improvement.
So I tore off the blue vinyl glued to the cover piece, and this is what I found... see pic!

... a lovely piece of copper sheet or brass! I thought it was just light steel until I took a wire brush to take off all the glue. Looks almost nice enough to keep! But I will glue carpet over it anyway.
I'm assuming this is probably a PO replacement item? Or were these actually copper sheet?

The first one I've ever seen in copper. My guess is the copper was easier to make the compound bend in it and would be easily molded in place. The original wing nut was brass if I remeber correctly...

If it works, use it.

Geoff.,

Originally, the piece was made of steel. Your copper job
looks like it was 'home made' in that the corners are fairly uneven in their shape!

Cheers.

Has to be a home made job Geoff. My original is made from steel. The original "wing" nut was brass but with long, flat ears as opposed to the Mickey Mouse type. Cheers

OK, I carpeted the copper cover piece, cut out the appropriate bit of the shroud, and installed. Looks great.
Only problem I realized (and this is why the PO who installed the last carpet never bothered to put a hole in at all)... the heater will completely block any access to the gearbox anyway. I think I can *just* get in to pull the dipstick, but filling it? By feel?
Guess once a year, I'll have to pull the heater...

While you have access Geoff determine exactly what quantity of fluid you need to fill your gearbox to the correct level. I used the pic below provided by Roy ? on this site to determine this level. Mark the desired quantity on a clean transparent disposable bottle with a tube sealed through the cap. Drain the gearbox into a separate container & then using the marked container with new fluid (or the old stuff filtered for good measure if you're into recycling), insert, invert, squeeze & refill. This way you don't need to either see or feel what you're doing. Cheers

Great idea, Peter. I will experiment...
