MG TD TF 1500 - gear box - hole is oval

I got a "new" gear box. The hole for the calvis pin is oval (see pic).

Is that significant? Or does it stand until everything else is worn out?

W_Mueller

Herr Mueller,
That is very typical but not critical. As long as the hole is not broken away, it will be fine to use as is.
The wear comes from years of wear from the clevis pin.
Lew Palmer

As Lew mentioned this is a common problem. In your case it looks as if it has already been repaired, I see what looks like a seam weld around the centre plate. I had the same oval hole. I fixed it by opening the hole to make it circular, then inserted a steel bush. My reasoning was that if there is play between the pin and the plate I may get clutch judder with the correct diameter hole.

thanks to all

I'll try to fix it.

Speaking of clutch judder, do all TDs judder when backing up a slope in reverse? Mine has done that for 40 years but never in first going forward.
John Quilter (TD8986)

There are a few things that can cause clutch judder, but the two that come to mind are 1) a contaminated clutch plate (oil and dirt mainly), 2) a misalignment between the angle of the gearbox output flange and the input flange on the differential. They should be as close to parallel as possible. Sometimes the differential can slip in its U bolts and cause such a misalignment.
Lew Palmer

One important factor - the case is cast steel instead of iron. Welding repairs are much easier on steel if needed.
