MG TD TF 1500 - Gear Starter

I’m sure the answer to this is in the archives, but I’ve never been able to figure out how the archives work, so I am probably asking a redundant question.

In any event, it seems that there are choices for buying a gear starter for my TF. There appear to be at least two manufacturers of gear starter for our T-Series. What are the recommendations?

Right now my TF is + grnd but I’m planning to change it to - grnd soon.

I buy my high torque gear reduction starters from British Parts Northwest. All gear reduction starters are based on a Denso design adapted to our xpags. I have had good performance from them on my high horsepower XPAG. They actually draw less current than the original Lucas starters, are much lighter and easier to get in and out of the chassis. I will say I’ve had several failures with extreme usage over the last 10 years. Both occasions BPNW replaced the starters no questions asked even when the starters were several years old. But the car had low mileages. They are a great company have always been helpful with the products they offer.

Really great advice, Bill. Much appreciated. So, I'll buy from them. I assume negative ground only.

I've heard of a lot of issues with those starters, similar to Bill having several failures with few miles on them. So I feel like I have to point out that the factory starters generally last for 20+ years before needing service. Unless you have a very high compression engine that requires more torque, I'm not sure I see the point in buying a more expensive, less reliable unit.

... ooops. Just realized that starters are ground insensitive.

Our starters are not polarity sensitve, I do not know about modern high torque.
I have just borrowed a starter off a neg earth TF and it is working fine on my pos earth TF.
