MG TD TF 1500 - Gearbox dipstick cover - carpet
Where should the dipstick cover (Moss #407-810) sit on the gearbox cover of my TF? 1) On top of the carpet on the gearbox cover? 2) Against the steel gearbox cover with the carpet that is glued to the dipstick cover butting against the carpet on the gearbox cover? FYI - The carpet is not glued to the gearbox cover. Either position looks kinda ragged. I'll need to trim the carpet on the gearbox cover if #2 is the correct position. > Image of dipstick cover on Chris Couper's site http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtd/Pictures/Restoration/dipstick_cover.jpg Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 |

Mine sits directly against the steel gearbox cover. The carpet on mine is loose and has a flap that is still attached to the tunnel carpet which folds out of the way when you want to remove the cover to check the fluid level. That set up with the t nut on the outside and carpet glued tight is pretty slick though. Alex |

Alex - That is a slick setup. I had read about a flap over the dipstick cover in the archives. My Moss carpet for the gearbox cover has an oval cutout for the dipstick and fill plug. Too large for the dipstick cover to neatly cover the hole / too small for the dipstick cover to fit neatly inside against the gearbox cover. Lonnie TF7211 |

I posted this to an incorrect but similar thread. My I-phone does not like to do this. The carpet over the gearbox well is not glued. It is tacked on the bottom at a few points near the gearshift lever. The carpet is glued to the dipstick cover. I used Weldwood solvent based contact cement in a can. Brushed on, 3 coats, 15 to 20 minuets drying time between coats. Please ignore the T-nut. I cant find what I did with the correct one so I made a temporary one. Also please forgive me the miss post. Jim - Thanks. I'll trim the dipstick opening so that the dipstick cover fits flush with the gearbox cover carpet. Your carpet looks great. Did you follow Chris Couper's guidelines? I'll tack my gearbox cover carpet to the floorboards like you did. Hope that I don't need to remove it if it gets wet. I plan to screw the carpet that's under the seats to the floor instead of nailing it as Chris suggests. Any suggestions for carpeting and attaching the footrest? Lonnie TF7211 |

I Blended Chris', Dave's, Moss's,and Horst's instructions into something I thought was good enough. I left the foot rest until last to think about it. The piece Moss designates for that area is deceiving. I think it scrap from something else. The shape is not what is needed. Consider it to be a blank and fit it as well as you can, with the grain running in the correct direction. My original foot rest was lost at the painters. I purchased a used, but original one, off eBay. I cleaned it up and gave it 3 coats of Hammerite Rust Cap. The back of the carpet is rough. It needs several coats of glue. I have not had much luck with the stuff in a can, except for some I got from Summit Racing. 3M or Auto Parts store stuff does not stick and tends to remain "Wet" I use the old fashion stuff in a can and a throwaway brush. I started with the major flat part. I did not coat the edges. I aligned the grain and clamped the (now sticky) carpet to a bench, and using a board I did the second flat part, and left it overnight. The I did the sides, first coating with contact cement, just two at a time again clamping for at least several hours. (It takes 4 pieces of flat steel or wood to do two sides. Finally I lapped the carpet over the edges, after coating, and then clamping. Working around the foot rest and trimming as needed. Jim B. ![]() |
