MG TD TF 1500 - Gearbox mount and tailshaft bolts
As the engine is out of my YT being rebuilt, I decided to replace the gearbox mount rubbers. I am assuming that the same hardware was used in both the Ys and TC/TD depending on when the Y was built.
1. I found that the 2 bolts holding the Mount saddle to the chassis were both different lengths and threads. What is the correct size, thread and length? 2. What thread is the saddle bolt? 3. Also found the bolts holding the tailshaft to the gearbox were different lengths. One of which had a split pin inserted. What is the correct length? TIA Stuart |

Item 2 above should be "Fork, rear mount" bolt (Moss 411-030) (has dia of 8.33mm), The nut went rolling under shelving and is irretrievable, hence my question. I have tried various nuts, but none seem to fit. I could not get the new Moss Rubbers to compress, and even after trimming edges so they fit all the way down (as suggested in archives) enough to allow a nut and washer to be fitted below the rubber grommet, so have refitted the old softer rubbers. Frustrating when AM parts don't fit. That makes item No 66 on my Moss list. Sorry I can't help with the info you need Stuart. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Hi Stuart, I found that the gearbox rubbers for my TF would fit in two different positions both of which ‘looked’ correct. One was tight, the other impossible. Can’t help with the thread, that’s a weird size, too big for 5/16 and too small for 3/8. I will see if mine is accessible in the morning. Chris |

Definitely BSF thread, I think 5/16". The rear mount rubbers available in the US have been too fat for many years from all suppliers. Quite easy to face down on a bench grinder. Also, some of the rubber washers under the cupped washer are too thick. Easy to fix. George |

Thank you for your replies. Tony Slattery, over on the Y type board, has also provided information on both bolts. Stuart |

I cleaned the bolt thread and found a 5/16" BSF castle nut. I have got a nut partially onto the bolt by compressing the soft rubbers with clamps.
As I have decided not to rush the engine rebuild and forgo attending MG TYme 2018 in Canberra, I may change the soft rubbers for the new solid rubbers. Once I get the engine back in the car and attached to the gearbox, I will use a chain around the gearbox and under my hydraulic jack and compress the rubbers. (Jack is currently holding the gearbox up) Stuart |

Stuart the rubbers do not have the right shore hardness. Declan Burns told me to give them into a washing machine with a big add of softener. |

Winfried, That only works when old rubber is being re-used but not when a piece is made wrongly. Regards Declan |

Thank you Declan for setting the record straight. I had misunderstood. |

Glycerine can also be used very successfully to revive old and stiff rubber. The handbrake boots at the rear wheels came up like new after this treatment. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Original TD had 1 1/4 inch by 5/16 BSF bolts and Philidas nuts on the drive shaft. |
