MG TD TF 1500 - Generator front bearing

The C39PV2 generator on my TF has a felt circle at the bushing in the front plate. What's the purpose? Does in need to be oiled? There is no oil cap to add oil after it's reassembled.

The WSM says that a hand press is required to remove the armature shaft from the end bracket and bearing. Mine slid out without using a press. Problem? I don't see any play in the shaft and pulley.

Thanks,

Can't say I saw this on my genny Lonnie. Mind you I did not look for it.
If it was there, then a light coat of grease would have sufficed. The bearing is sealed and I presume does not need an extra seal.

Only way to lube front bearing is to remove it. Felt seal where bushing spacer fits is just a dust seal. Original bearings were installed with a riveted plate. I see your 4 holes are threaded, so suspect it has screws on other side for bearing securing plate.

Thanks Rod,

I didn’t think about the bearings being sealed. I can see the same packing next to the collar on your gen. (The collar was removed in my gen). May be a dust seal.

The screws holding my bearing enter from the back as opposed to yours entering from the front. Now I understand why my front plate has four recesses.

Original bearings weren't sealed. They were just plain ball bearings and the grease only lasted for reasonable time.

I’ll take a photo of my bearings. Maybe you can tell me what I have.

I think the originals had the retainer plate riveted on . Likely yours was tapped and threaded after bearing replacement. There was originally a felt seal somewhere. I think the pulley fits into the recess on your seal, as the original bearings were not sealed. I recall the original dynamos had the 4 hole retainers, the later replacements only three. BTW, your nut is in the mail. George

Here is a front and a back photo of the bearing in the front plate of my C39PV generator. Sealed or not? Oil the felt or not?

George - Thanks for the generator info. And thanks even more for the nut!

Can't tell if bearing is sealed by your photo. If you oil felt, it will probably just help collect dirt/dust.
Richard Cameron

Originally the bearing would have had a tin plate seal on the inside but open on the side you are showing and then a wave washer, the felt ring and then the metal retainer ring
The bearing would have been grease filled and the felt sealed the grease in and the weather out
Newer replacement bearings are pre-greased and sealed on both sides with a flat, black(usually) seal and don't need greasing
It's a good idea to leave the felt seal in there even with the sealed bearing as protection against the weather (water)

If you have a look in past the felt ring and there's a black washer stopping you from seeing the balls in the bearing ,then it is a sealed bearing
If it's not sealed and the bearing is ok you can poke a little grease in there with the end of a screwdriver or similar, I wouldn't oil that felt as it will attract dust etc as already mentioned

With the press fit --some are some aren't usually you can get them apart by hand
As long as the shaft is a nice fit in the bearing ,when you tighten the front nut up it will all be held solid

Lonnie,

None of the above photos show original end plates, they show that the four rivets have been replaced with screws.

The Lucas parts manual gives the following information on the front bearing for the 22258D C39PV-2 generator:

Part number 189307 single row, ball journal, light type metric.

Light type means non sealed.

However it would be better to replace it with a fully sealed bearing, Modern reference 6202-2RS-SKF

Please note, for those who may not know..Don’t over tighten the fan /gen belt.
