MG TD TF 1500 - generator question
MG TD 7191 built early-mid 1951 Started to replace upper gen to bracket bolt which had disappeared when I noticed the bottom bolt directly below was also missing. (yes i know this should never have happened). Checking to final bolt (still very tight) I noticed several flat washers added as spacers to move the generator forward. HMMMMMM. Also, when compared to drawing in Moss catalog that the adjusting bracket is oriented opposite the drawing. Now to the point, I suspect the generator is a replacement: Markings are: on generator body - LUCAS 22265F 9 60 C39PV2 DA41 12 volt made in England end plate: made in England 227773 LUCAS qualcase2 A Are my suspicions correct? I have found many other really odd changes by DPO's. clutch & brake pedal pads from FOMOCO oil & fuel lines fittings brazed to change connections. Thanks for your response |

This generator has a build date of September, 1960. It was clearly installed after the car was manufactured. There is a spacer that is often discarded. Perhaps this is what the washers were trying to replicate? David |

I run a 22744; C40 unit manufactured in 5-68. I believe I get 2 more amps out of it... ;) it's from a Sprite I think, it has been on the car since I started driving it in 1979. Attached is a photo of my mounting, if it helps. Warmly, dave ![]() |

Above comments right on. The most important thing is that the belt is in correct alignment with the water pump and crank pulley. Use washers as needed to get that fore/aft alignment just right. The fit with the spacer/washers should be passive, so the brackets aren't bend toward each other. |

Dave, no tach drive? Or is that just for the photo shoot? Thanks. Jud |

The upper bolt, passing through the bracket and into the front generator frame ear, is one of the few Whitworth bolts on the car. Jim B. |

"The upper bolt, passing through the bracket and into the front generator frame ear, is one of the few Whitworth bolts on the car." The only problem with that is that probably 99.9% of the TD in America has had that bolt replaced with a standard National Course bolt - same thread count and while the Whitworth and the American NC is that the thread for is different, but not enough so that the bolts are not interchangeable. Cheers - Dave |

Doug Pelton had original thread and marked bolts a while back, not sure if he still carries or not. George |

Jud, that was during assembly. I did take a lot of pictures. Here is one with the tach drive. Warmly, dave ![]() |
