MG TD TF 1500 - Generator Rear Bearing
Did anyone ever come up with a mod to replace the bushing with a roller/ball bearing? Possibly using a later style end plate? PJ |

I'd love it. I came up on an MGB on the side of the highway a few months ago. Stuck generator. I wasn't much help. We loosened the belt just enough to kinda run the water pump, he limped home. .... |

I've done it on MGB generators, so I don't see why it can't be done on anything else. Bored out slightly and pressed in a caged roller bearing. This generator has been running with an extremely tight belt (150hp blower engine) for a couple of years now with no issues. |

If you are not running a supercharger like Steve is, just run the fan belt quite loose (1 inch of deflection on the longest run between pulleys). Cheers - Dave |

That's how it's set now Dave and no problems. I was just wondering if someone came up with an idea to convert it to a sealed bearing. Other than the tach drive shaft and bushing, the generator is almost identical to the one I have on one of my old tractors with a sealed rear bearing. Be an interesting conversion and shouldn't be that difficult. PJ |

I don't believe there is enough material in the rear plate to hold a sealed bearing. Lucas made industrial and agricultural versions of many of their generators which included dual bearings, so if you're really lucky then you may find a rear plate with bearing to fit your TD generator. |

The Lucas C48 generator used in on the Jaguar S Type and some Mark II cars had a bearing at both ends primarily due to the need to run a Holburn Eaton power steering pump on the back of the generator. Also this unit's output was much greater than the stock TD unit. |
