MG TD TF 1500 - Generator tach drive shaft question

Does the tach drive shaft in the picture look correct? It appears to me that the end of the shaft is pinched together. Should the slot be straight or does it as it appears? I don't have the coupler to see how they fit together.

TW Burchfield

From the picture I would think it is just showing wear in the slot that drives the Tach gearbox slug.
If the tang on the slug still fits into it. It should not be a problem. If it is pinched as you say and won't fit dress it out a bit with a small file.

Here is a picture of the fitting that drives the Tach gearbox on the rear of the dynamo.

Thanks very much R.D. Was your tach gearbox a little hard to turn when it was off the car? Mine turns but not by hand. Do you think flushing it with degreaser and then refilling it with grease is a good idea?
TW Burchfield

I took mine apart with the two screws, cleaned out all the old grease and re-filled it with fresh grease. It should turn fairly easily. FYI, the bearing oiler to the left of the gearbox should be filled with oil not grease.

Thanks Jim. I would certainly do the same but mine is riveted together.
TW Burchfield

I drilled the rivets out and replaced them with machine screw and nuts when putting it all back together. For next time :) Lithium grease is good won't get thick in winter.

R. D.,

Your modifications should make this problem area just about bullet proof. Your picture is great at showing how it is done. Thanks!

Mine was completely frozen after sitting for 45 years.

I unscrewed the grease fitting and kept flushing it with Kroil. Eventually it would work back and forth.
More Kroil and periodic working got it to turn. Soon, wit more Kroil, it turned easily.
At that point I mounted it in a Drill press, and turning at a bout 1000 rpm I kept flushing it with Kroil.

I did not take it apart.

In a short time it was absolutely free.
When I felt I had removed all the old hardened grease, I manually fed in Teflon enhanced white grease and put the grease fitting back.

I would not use WD-40 on this. Perhaps 3-in-1 if you do not have Kroil.
