MG TD TF 1500 - Getting Engine to Idle at 3,000 RPM
For a long time I've fiddled with trying to set/check my car's advance at 3,000 rpm. Tweaking the adjustments on the carburetors can get an idle speed of perhaps 2,000 rpm. I can readily measure the engine speed, but I can not illuminate the timing mark and TDC mark while standing on the carburetor side of the engine. Nor can I tweak the advance from that side of the car. Does anybody have a simple jury-rig method of holding the engine speed around 3,000 rpm while you're standing on the ignition side of the engine? I've even tried clothespins. TNX, Bud |

TF has fast idle adjustment on the front carb, not sure if TD has that. Does not have to be turned down too far, after I am done I set it so it is just clear at idle with choke in. Easy method. Peter |

Hi Bud. You can either just turn up the idle adjustment screw or fold a piece of paper multiple times and put it under the idle adjustment screw. butch |

Thanks for the suggestions, folks, but the adjustment screw approach can not open the throttle far enough to go beyond about 2,000 rpm. A fellow TD'er, Matt McDermott, sent me some images of a device that can lift the throttle linkage to its maximum. I'll be giving a try shortly. At the moment I'm seven days beyond having had my right knee replaced. That makes both of them now. Bud |

Perhaps a spreader bar type of woodworking clamp? Or just a piece of lumber cut to length between the seat and the accelerator pedal? Regards, Tom |
