MG TD TF 1500 - Glove box material

As a new owner I could probably fill up this page with questions. But I'm trying to restrain myself and the archives are an excellent first step. But, My car has a sheet metal glove box. Was this ever standard or was fiberboard the only thing fitted. And is there a suitable spray to duplicate the original flocking?

Which model exactly?

Welcome, TW. But, one of the things that you want to keep in mind is that this forum handles both TDs and TFs. Here is a case where the items are very different. I can tell you that all TD glove boxes were made of a fiberboard material. I think TFs were made from the same material, but I get in trouble when I start talking about TFs. If you search the archives you'll find some discussions about the flocking material. Peter Hehir, from Down Below, has developed a technique for emulating the original. Bud

Newbie mistake. Sorry. I'm sure it won't be the last time.

TF gloveboxes use a steel base or tray and stiff cardboard top. Both are lined with the same material as the car interior panels (vinyl coated fabric). The two parts are usually rivetted together and the underside, visible from the footwell, is painted the same colour as the dash.

TW. Check the archives (link in header) and put in glovebox and flocking for the search terms. Peter Hehir did a great bit of work on this subject not long ago.

Depending whether you are building a concurs car, then the prescribed material is what you want to use, but as my TF is not concurs, I used felt for the liner which does not have a shiny finish, but matches the interior color. PJ

For the interior flocking of the glove box in our TD, I used a green flocked contact paper. If you want to have a more original flocking, go to Micro-Mark http://www.micromark.com/ (hobby tools and such). They sell a flocking kit. Cheers - Dave

Thanks very much everyone for the help. FYI, I did check the archives before posting but didn't find anything. Turns out I was using the words glove box instead of glovebox.

If you need any brown flocking Tim I have a few bags left. Each bag is enough to do two gloveboxes. Best results come from the spray & shake method. Cheers

Thanks very much Peter but the shipping from there to here, Midwest USA, would probably be prohibitive. Are you near Sydney? Last time I was there was 1969 on R&R from Vietnam. What a time I had (I think). King's cross was really happening back then. I imagine things have changed a little.

I'm in Sydney in Rozelle a little west of the CBD. Probably about $20 AUD all up for the bag & most of that would be postage. The Cross has toned down a bit but is still as sleazy as ever. I was in the RAAF at the time & we used to say you guys were over sexed, over paid & over here! Cheers

Thanks Peter. I think I'm going to try a spray they have for model cars. In 1969 the Pubs in Sydney were segregated somewhat. Men in the bar area and women in the seating area. Guess where this oversexed GI spent his time. :-)

BTW The Brits said the same thing about my dad and his buddies during WWII.
