MG TD TF 1500 - Good clear coat for polished aluminum
Waiting for carb rebuild kit so I polished the aluminum parts. Anyone know of a good, durable clear coat for the parts?

TW, I have tried many, but witht he heat, rain, and general tarnishing, I haven't found any coatings that last,, and if they don't last, they are difficult to remove to get back to shiney again, Looks like you spent some time on the overflow tubes and banjo fittings,,, Hope you are going to replace them with the proper length of tubing! Steve, I'd be happy to replace them with the proper length of tubing if I knew what that was :-) Do you have a source where I can find that information. Thanks for confirming my suspicion that clear protective coatings don't really hold up to the engine environment. |

OK, I've looked around and I assume the correct overflow pipes are so long as to allow any overflow to spill on the ground well past the hot engine components. Is that correct? Someone must have trimmed the ones I have in the past. |

TW, My TD 29350 has two small holes in the front engine mount. The tubes run through those (on my car at least). |

I tried clear coat on some polished brass copper at restoration. It tarnished underneath, was a mess, and was really hard to remove. Best to keep the accessible areas polished with Simichrome polish or something. George |

Better off to just get the polish out periodically, and give it all a buff. Much easier to do that than try to clear coat. ... CR |

Check this page for the nitty details such as this. Its about 1/2 way down. http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_nitty.htm I use Mothers Polish for the aluminum but I did coat the body because its impossible to polish after assembly. I just used common clear coat you can get from an automotive paint supplier. They have it in spray cans. |

TW, I have used Eastwood's Diamond Clear on brass, steel and aluminum with great results. The brass parts have not tarnished back in over 5 years, of course that is sitting in the basement since my car is still a work in progress. |

I use jewelers rouge on the buffer and Mothers by hand for a final polish. They seem to last quite a while. At least a couple years before dulling slightly. I don't spray them with anything. PJ |

I coated some brass parts with Duplicolor ceramic engine clear coat and after about 10,000 miles they are still nice and shiny. Engine tag, brass bolts, core plugs, etc. |

the Dupli-Color DE1636 Ceramic engine clear coat is now on sale at Advance Auto Pts for $5.50 Al |

Dupli-Color DE1636 Ceramic engine clear coat is what I used on the alloy and polished bits on my Sunbeam Alpine engine when I rebuilt it... cylinder head, alternator, distributor body, intake manifold, water outlet, bell housing, oil filter base, etc. Came out great. Since then the metal hasn't tarnished at all and the clear coat hasn't shown any aging whatsoever... it's been 2 years now.

Another photo of my Alpine engine right before I popped it in... you can see many of the parts that got clear coated.
