MG TD TF 1500 - Grease in steering rack
Dear all, somewhere along the line the steering rack has been greased instead of oiled. Does it do any harm to leave the grease alone? The car seems to steer just fine. Tom |

The rack is oiled for a reason, the oil will flow back and forth lubricating all the parts as the car is steered, the grease won't flow. I would clean all the grease out and lubricate as the factory recommended. PJ |

Second PJ’s comments. The rack will be running dry. Regards, Tom |

It really depends on how much grease has been put in there. If filled with grease, then I agree with the responses above. If grease has been pumped in there only a couple of times, I think there is nothing much to worry about, as long as you use oil in future. Grease is a blend of oil and soap, so when thinned with an excess of oil, with which it is compatible, it will still flow and lubricate. Dave H |

Grease is better than nothing at all, but I would think that it will not get to all of the areas that the oil might be intended to. I would imagine that the steering might be a bit stiffer in extreme cold weather as well. That said the replacement racks are greased. I know which of the two I would prefer not to replace a boot on.

Just took mine apart to check this exact issue. But my advantage is I have the car all apart for restoration. Taking the rack apart had always concerned me, but I found it was very easy and had no problem getting it apart. I did find a little grease in mine, but not as much as I thought. |

I find the problem is trying to inject oil in occasionally as indicated by the Workshop Manual. I converted a grease gun into an oil gun but it was only partially successful using the steering rack housing nipple on a TF. |

Often the Fitting is removed, and Oil just poured in. Alternately, you can inject under the Lip of the Gaiter. Mike TF-8257 |
