MG TD TF 1500 - Grill slat paint

I'm on a mission. I have three sets of slats that need to be painted red to match the interiors on my my cars. I'm looking for the red used on the TDs and I presume the TCS as well. The dark red engine paint is too dark to use. Has any one repainted their red slats and can suggest a specific color to use?

Thanks

Interior Color
It appears that the green and red were the same as the red and green body colors. If you do not have a red or green car, and your interior is not tan, then choose the MG Red or Almond Green as the grill color appropriately. The color that matched tan interior was a light tan color. It is reported that on some red or green cars with tan interiors, the grill slats could be painted the body color.

Paul even with that information and I were to consider it there are two reds used on the TDs. Mg Red and Autumn Red. I am hoping someone would chime in with what they actually used.

Thanks

I used the same as body.

Do you need the codes? If so page 58 of the Moss parts book lists them.

Forgot to add that you may find it hard to match them. There is a company named Global that matches old paint. You may try them. If you want the lighter red I can help with a modern formula but it is NOT a perfect match.

See below. It is a two stage paint.

Bill, Autumn Red was only used periodically for a short time. IMHO, an Autumn Red car would look odd with M.G. Red slats. Bud

Thanks JWP and Bud. TD 4834 has red painted slats but I'm not sure the color is right as there are chips and I can see what looks like a goldish color underneath. Whether that was a base used to brighten the red or was a replacement at one time off a car that had tan interior is unclear. Dads SSG/red TD/c 8151 had a red grill. TD 24060 has a black grill but car was ivory/red so I can only guess it had been altered by a PO. TD/c 16920 is AutumnRed/red but has the appearance package chrome slats. Dads car came with a NOS grill in the box in primer.

I guess what really has me stumped is my red Moss interior kit I installed in TD-4834 is kind of a muddy red for the lack of a way to describe it. I don't know how close this is to the original color. I have seen red interiors that seemed to be a much more vibrant color. I believe it was a Buckingham(?) interior from the UK. Is the Moss red interior a more true representation. Looking at the remnants of my original Rexine door cards it would seem to be close to what Moss offers. Though the door cards were well worn and obviously the sun and weather over 60 yrs certainly would degrade the color.

Go to an auto paint jobber and they will likely let you look at swatch books and you can pick a modern color. Lots of solid reds of all hues are out there on modern cars. George

If your car is red then you use the body color. If not find a good deep rich red you like.

The Moss red is not close at all. But if you have a Moss red interior any paint that comes close to that will probably look best on a non red car.

I had mine poster coated..thousands of miles...no paint chips.

tm peterson, poster or powder coated? Anyone use an adhesion agent before painting?

Bill,

i have a new Moss interior in my TD, and the Red is not the bright red as was the original. The interior is more of a cranberry red, so what I did was re-spray the slats to match the new interior colour.

For the bright red , I used Rustoleum "Cardinal red", and for the cranberry interior I found Rustoleum "Burgandy" an almost direct match.

If you have a swatch of your interior colour, I would just go to Home Depot, or the like and match it to can lids.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

TW I hadn't even considered powdercoating but for durability it is certainly an option.

CR I will follow your lead and see what rustoleum offers as well.

Haha...you are, of course correct...powder coat. Darn auto correct coupled with fat fingers. Regards, tom
