MG TD TF 1500 - Head casting number
My 1950 TD has a casting number on the head as 22852. Does anyone know what this head was from originally. John..Sydney |

Dunno John. TC & early TD had 22952. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

From Neil Cairns: "Later TD, & Y oval hole cylinder head, short reach plug, 22952" I think he means later TC? Could your 8 really be a sloppy 9? I have a couple in my attic I can look at tonight. George |

I had another look at the numbers and unfortunately the number 8 has been flatened off. Itis possible it could be a nine (9). Also, at the top of the number 2 there is stamped the numbers, 250 of about 1/8" high. They are not cast into the head but have been stamped there. Any ideas? John...Sydney |

John, measure the thickness of the head, from left field 250 could be that 25 thou has been shaved from the head, standard head is 3.0177. |

If it has banana shaped water jackets it's off a TC or an early TD. If it has those jackets then it's definitely a 22952. Can't help you with the stamping. George is correct, later TC or if you like, early TD. I think Neil has it wrong. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Unfortunately, I cannot remember nor can I find where I wrote down the thickness of the head. However I think it has had about 3/16" taken off for I had to get a thick head gasket made to bring it back to near the original thickness. If one subtracts 0.187 (3/16") from what the standard head size of 3.0177 is then it gives a head thickness of 2.83" which is quite a bit undersize. I obtained a specially made thick gasket which has done the trick and the engine preforms very well. In actual fact it looks as though the head could have had shaved off it 25 thou.as suggested by Graeme. John...Sydney |

John, my TF has a ported TC head on it, short reach plugs with the casting number 22952, BUT the 9 looks very much like an 8. Regards, Don TF 4887 |

Don, I have had my chief adviser and technical assistant (my wife) cast her eagle eye over the cylinder head and in her humble and technical opinion believes it is more than likely a 9. As you say the 9 very much looks like an 8. Thank you all for your help now I know what I have :) Regards, John...Sydney |
