MG TD TF 1500 - Help removing air-cleaner manifold
I'm having trouble removing the a/c manifold from my TC, I think the TD might be similar. The problem is I can't reach the bolts holding the manifold on the carbs (not the manifold on the block). A withworth ringy won't fit and an open ender can just get in on two of the four bolts, is there a 'trick'? Regards, Don TF 4887 "Figaro' TC 1736 "Sibelius' |

Don would it be easier to remove the inlet manifold complete with carbs & oil bath manifold? That way you have more room to do what you need to do working on the bench. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Thanks Peter but all I want to do is adjust the mixture and I can't with the a/c manifold on. Regards, Don TF 4887 "Figaro' TC 1736 "Sibelius' |

With the choke spring out of the way (be sure to return it after EVERY adjustment), the adjusting nuts should be reachable - sometimes you have to take off the slow-running bracket to reach them, sometimes the bracket has a big enough cut-out that it's not a problem. I don't remove the air intake manifold to adjust TC carbs; to do so changes the settings anyway! Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Thanks Tom, I was looking at lifting the pistons to adjust to mixture as I have done on previous SU's. Do you do it another way? Regards, Don TF 4887 "Figaro' TC 1736 "Sibelius' |

Moss has an SU tuning kit that includes a rod that slips into the top of the piston shaft. That lets you lift the piston without removing air cleaner. Been long time since worked on TC carbs, but I'm sure you can get the manifold bolts off. Suggest removing all in the way- canister, perhaps the bulkhead to radiator tank support, etc. George http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=37190 |

Don - Sorry, I thought the adjusting nuts were the issue. As George mentions, you can use one of those kits, or you can bend a piece of wire into a long u-shape which will push snugly into the oil reservoir, allowing you to lift the piston the necessary 3/16" (no more) to check the mixture. It took me years to believe how little the piston needs to be lifted! Tom Lange MGT Repair |
