MG TD TF 1500 - Help - Running Rough - Condenser or What?
Hi Keith Here, After one of the best days, winning the Greenwich Concours Peoples Choice, on the way home my 1954 MG TF started running progressively worse, like a plug or two wasn't firing. At home I have tried a different coil instead of the 1953 original on there, did the points, looked at plugs (a little black) and everything but the condenser. Can a condenser act that way? The carbs were rebuilt and ran fine for a couple of hundred miles. Fuel in both bowls and they float. Really strange. At wits end. Picture before trouble started. ![]() |

Condenser could indeed cause that. Your rotor could also be the culprit. Congrats on the award. Bud |

Did it sputter to a stop or just limp home on one wing? Hairline crack in the cap or rotor. Bad ground to block. Crummy plug wire connection. Congrats on the awards. Where in NJ? I was in Scotch Plains and Stirling. .... |

Limped along. Long Valley Thanks. |

One of the leads was touching the engine block on our TD causing rough running. Matthew. |

Do you still have the distributer ground wire in place? (Black wire from the distributer to the generator bracket) Are you running a red rotor? Is the tach. Drive touching the distributer wire lug? Is your point/condenser plate secure? Mounting screws tight? When was the distributer rebuilt? After some investigating I would replace the condenser next. By the way, the last two new condensers I installed were faulty. Be prepared to replace it twice. B.T.W., You are missed at Saratoga. -David |
