MG TD TF 1500 - Hinge Pin Removal

Any suggestions on the best/easiest way to remove the hinge pins from new Moss Motors door hinges?

They are staked at the bottom to lock into the barrel. Perhaps grind off the top of the pin and knock it out through the bottom?

Thanks,

Lonnie, why do you have to remove the pins? If totally necessary, I would grind the top off to drive out as you say, but, use a bucking bar under the hinge to prevent from distorting the wood where it's mounted, might need two people, one to hold the bucking bar and one to drive the pin out. ?? PJ

Oops,
Do you have new pins? Hopefully their the same size.

PJ and Lonnie-
I believe the old hinge pins should be 1/4" in diameter. The following link might help with finding some replacement pins (bolts) to replace if you decide to remove the old pins.

Thanks Paul and Roy,

Roy - I'll be using new hinges, so I don't think that bushings are necessary. But your info on making new pins is perfect.

Paul - I should have given more info about my project.

The new hinges have not been mounted permanently the new hinge pillars. I'll drive out the pins on the bench. The wood inside the doors is not new but is in good condition. However, the bottom bolt hole in the right door for both hinges was drilled wrong some time in the car's life, causing the hinges to be misaligned.

I'll align the hinges with a 1/4" rod and shims, then drill new bottom holes. Need to remove the pins to insert the rod.

I'm making this up as I go.

Any suggestions or other recommendations about removing the pins?

Thanks,

Lonnie-
I can't quite tell from you photo but are the pin stakes inside or just outside the brass hinge hole?

You may be able to use a sharp 1/4" drill bit to drill slightly into the bottom of the pin to upset the stakes enough to drive the pin out. I'm assuming the top of the pin is domed like the originals. Cutting off the top would be somewhat difficult due to the shape. A thin cut off wheel would do the trick but great care must be taken to not damage the top of the soft brass. Getting close enough to the brass will be difficult.

Roy -

They are staked right where the pin meets the brass barrel.

You bring up a valid point about difficulty grinding off the top of the steel pin. I may destroy the hinge.

So it looks like my options are to align the new hinges with a straight edge, which is better than nothing, but not nearly as good as a rod through the hinges.

Or to use my old hinges. Align them with a rod to drill the holes. Then ream and have new SS pins made. The hinges were probably bent by previous owners, so that adds another variable to aligning the hinges throughout the arc of the door.

From your new image you might want to drill from the bottom using a 1/4" drill bit to "wipe out" the stakes.
Any small damage at the bottom of the brass hinge should not show.

Lonnie.
Why not grind the top off the pin. You can coarse grind it close and then with a good hand file dress the rest off and then drift the pin out through the bottom.
Make a wooden clamp to mout the hinge in your vise. With it clamped tightly with wood on both sides of the closed hinge you cna drift it out without further damage.

How about using a Dremel tool vs the drill at the bottom? You just need to clear out the area that has been struck. Less chance if damage I would think.
