MG TD TF 1500 - Holes and Tacks on the rear edge of the tub.

Started sanding the inside of the tub today. Started at the back and I already have some questions.

There are 4 large holes. These had a metal threaded expander in them.

There are three smaller holes

There are a number of fine nails.

Can someone clarify what goes in the 4 large holes and the three small holes? I am pretty sure when I put the car together in 1973, I did not have the back fasteners affixed correctly.

Are the fine nails for holding down the material that wraps over the back rail trim boards?

Here is a picture of the fasteners I pulled out of the large holes.

Bruce as I have what I believe to be an original rear trim piece I can confirm 5 holes. One in the centre, one quite close to each end and two more equidistant left and right of the centre one. These were to accommodate the 5 screws that secured the long rear tacking strip. These screws finished flush with the surface and were invisible once the Rexine had been folded over, down and secured to the underside of the rear top tub rail. No idea about the fine nails. Cheers

Thanks Peter.

I see 5 holes on the Moss timber drawing. Does anyone know if the Moss part comes with the holes in it?

I want to fill the large holes and redrill for the correct placement.

The Moss timber has no holes Bruce. Be warned however it is incredibly soft and I wonder about the security of the snaps. When fixing the rail with screws they pulled into the surface of the timber all too easily without having to countersink the heads. Knowing what I know now about the Moss supplied rail and side pieces, I'd make my own using the originals as templates. Problems included incorrect splay angles front and rear. Each had to be individually shaped and filled to ensure correct fitment. I also had to add a piece to the front edge and plane it back so it matched the splay on the inside of the top rail. Would have been quicker and a better job to start from scratch using a more durable timber species. Cheers

Thanks Peter. I will not be getting to this for some time, but I will look at my back rail and see if it is original.
