MG TD TF 1500 - hood-canvas

Dear All,

Can You help me please, how was this hood-canvas and webbing originally fixing to the back of the car?

I attach the picture.

It was originally secured with tacks, but you probably won't like that.

Search the archives about attaching it with snaps. Most of us have gone that route and there were a lot of discussions on that as well as tips and techniques.

Christopher Couper

Tamas, somewhere in the archives is a thread started by me showing how I installed my hood using snaps at the back and in a fashion that I can remove the canvas completely for storage. I rarely raise the hood so this allows me greatly increased storage and ease of access behind the seats.

I store the canvas together with some towels, a picnic table cloth and a pair of front wing covers in the wooden box on the luggage rack. The box is made from resawn redwood from my old hot tub. The redwood had been under water for 30 years so a little rain doesn't hurt it.

I used snaps but they do not hold well in the top material and eventually fail! I would use the twist type of fasteners if doing it again.

Ed: Did the snaps pull through the material? What size hole did you use when you put the snaps in?
Christopher Couper

Chris, I don't remember but I followed the instructions.

"Turn buckles" are what I meant above. Couldn't remember what they are called - duh?

Used snaps on mine and they have been and continue to be superb. Did you use enough?

TF? Originally screws with eyelets.

M Magilton

Matthew is correct on the fasteners. The tacks were only on the two straps, perhaps to hold them in place during installation.

And the usual slotted screws for TD and Phillips for TF.
Christopher Couper

I was always told that Phillips screws didn't come into common use until 1954, so for what that is worth, it would seem to confirm that TDs were slotted and TFs were Phillips.
