MG TD TF 1500 - how to adjust the Crown and Pinion clearance

For some time I have a noise when I drive with my TD in push mode. I believe there is too much clearance between crown wheel and pinion. How can I measure the clearance and how can I fix it. Do I need to remove the whole axle or can I do the job in situ? How can I pull out the Bearing set (37)? How to select the washer to adjust the pinion properly?

Thank you
Guenter

Guenter,
It could be your pinion nut has loosened. Other than that there is nothing can be done with the axle in the car. I suggest you read Cederstrand's booklet on CWP interchanges. Send me a PM.

Hi Guenter,
Could you describe the noise ? Singing, whistling, whining, squealing, rattling ? At what speed ?

After my initial drive with my 4.3 exchange, the whine of my 1952 MG MkII seemed amplified. However; my second drive the whine seemed to me much less. As Bud Kruger suggested I supressed the clutch while driving and noticed the whine decrease to almost non audible. The transmission is OEM so I will drain it and replace with Redline MT. Hoping the whine in the car will be reduced below worry.

The above reply is not mine. It's From Paris vonRabenau, the owner of the 4.3 geared axle. I mistakingly copied a link to the thread and sent it to him. Bud

@ Declan, thank you for your generous offer, I should come back in winter
@Laurent, it is a growl at 1500 to 2000 RPM in push mode

Guenter,
If it is just related to engine speed then it might not be your diff. When you say "push mode" I assume you have translated the German term "Schiebebetrieb" literally. The correct term in English is deceleration or after run. A whine on deceleration is usually due to the loss of the differential pinion bearing pre-load. You may be able to overcome this issue by tightening the pinion nut.

Guenter,

I don't think that there is a fast method to rectify your problem. You need to go through the whole set up process. This is the document which I used when I changed to 4.3 ratio.

Right,
Related to engine speed whatever gear is engaged : Gearbox or engine.
Related to car speed : could be diff.
