MG TD TF 1500 - How to seal gearbox to bell housing
I have a feeling this could be an area that may leak. The 8 bolts holding on the bell housing go through to the gearbox and if removed with oil in the gearbox it will leak out the bolt hole. There doesn't appear to be a gasket for this. I have gasket in a can I could use. Should I also run a small bit around each bolt. Or what is the correct procedure here. Just wondering also what is the other additional hole in the picture on the face where the 8 bolts go. Thanks for the help. ![]() |

Not sure about that hole, but here's an image of mine just before joining the gearbox and bellhousing. Bud

Perhaps for oil circulation from the top bearing down to the inner layshaft or vice-versa? I have also used sealer like Bud did. George |

Looking at the bell housing in conjunction with the gearbox pic it looks like the hole in the gearbox lines up with the recess on the bell housing. Hopefully my new seal in the bell housing stops any leaks from here. I guess this also explains why these parts are clean as they have been soaking in oil. ![]() |

Thanks for the comments guys....you have confirmed how I plan to proceed. |

I didn't use a gasket or gasket-goo between the gearbox and bellhousing the two times that I reassembled my TF gearbox. Nothing on the bolts but anti-seize. I haven't noticed any unusual drips. Lonnie TF7211 |

Thanks Lonnie I was told somthing similar by a friend. |

I put Loctite on the threads of bolts in oil pan and bell housing both for security and a little extra sealing. Cheers Dave |
