MG TD TF 1500 - How to Separate Cowl from Front QP?
My goal tomorrow is to remove the firewall and cowl from my TF. Looks like the original lead still joins the cowl to the quarter panels. I can't see a joint. Can you give me some tips on separating the cowl from the quarter panels? Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 |

Hi Lonnie,
In the area where the upper edge of the front quarter panel meets the lower edge/end of the cowl, you will need to use a hacksaw to cut through the Factory weld. Take careful note of the distance gap between the lower edge of the cowl and the upper edge of the quarter panel. This can affect the door closure clearance later when the from quarter panel and the edge of the cowl are welded back together. Also note that there is a rivet holding the narrow, bottom most part of the firewall to the metal body frame sub structure. There is one(1) each side of the firewall/bulkhead. They will need to be drilled out. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Thanks guys! The cowl is off. In fact, EVERYTHING is off.
I couldn't have done it without the help of Classic MG Club member Mike Messina. He pushed my procrastination aside and helped me remove all panels in two partial days of work. Most wood will be replaced. The main beams appear to be OK. Panels will be dip-stripped and epoxy sealed. Rust doesn't seen to be too bad, but won't know until stripped. George Pardee is progressing on the engine rebuild. My goal is to drive to GOF-South in April 2019 in Daytona Beach. But after reading Dave Braun's restoration saga of his TD, I'm a little apprehensive about making the deadline. Thanks again for your help. More questions on the way. Lonnie TF7211 ![]() |
