MG TD TF 1500 - Humidity

Today was a good day!! Humidity finally dropped to an unheard of 18% with an ambient temperature of 30 degrees! So out came the spray can of the perfectly colour matched Ivory top coat & the primed left hand side of the tub & scuttle got four coats from the one can. Looks great. Just like a bought one. The cans with propellant & their quality nozzles came from Germany & the acrylic lacquer cans were supplied & filled by ACE in Condell Park here in Sydney.

I know you've been waiting quite a while to get this done. Hope it flowed out nicely. Not orange peel of fish eyes and it'll run out to that beautiful lacquer luster.

What's the lacquer for? Is that your clear coat?

Personally for solid colors I am a single stage guy. Easier to repair and if you were going lacquer anyway, you end up sanding/polishing the top coat.

Peter, Sounds like ACE Hardware will fill spray cans with your own paint? Is that what you did? I would love one for touch ups. Will they do clear coat as well?
Pictures?

Thanks Bill. Quality finish, no peel & applies beautifully due to the propellant & the nozzle. Gotter love German technology! The spray pattern is similar to my spray gun.

No Chis, the Ivory acrylic lacquer is my top coat. I went with the original paint, not the really toxic single stage stuff. My finish will be as it was when the cars left the factory. Touch ups are straightforward with the acrylic. The big problem is humidity as you know. Yesterday was the first day in 2 years when the humidity dropped below 20%, where my car is garaged in Campsie. I use an app from the NSW Department of Meteorology which shows humidity for a particular area within a 6 kilometer radius in 3 hour periods. My 18% window was from 2pm to 5pm yesterday.

Ed, ACE stands for Automotive Colour & Equipment. They are suppliers of quality to the automotive industry here in Sydney. The paint is theirs & the 1000 grade wet & dry I'm using on the primer coat is extraordinary, as I'm still on the first sheet, having cut back the scuttle, front quarter, passenger door, sill & rear quarter on the passenger side as well as 2 rear guards. In a few days when I'm ready to wet block the top coat with 1500, I'll open up the garage, let some natural light shine in & then I'll take some pics. I'm not using clear coat. Cheers

Peter, I am surprised you are using 1000 and 1500 Wet and Dry. Is the 1500 your final rub-down? I used 1500, 2000 and finally 3000 Wet Sanding before using polishing compound on the finish the Previous Owner had applied in order to achieve a quality finish. Fortunately he had used many coats of paint. It took three full days Wet Sanding and polishing to obtain a respectable finish

Please supply more information about the paint and technology. The PO changed the color from the original Red to Green and I am considering converting it back to Red to match the VIN data

This was the recommendation of the paint supplier. After using wet 1500 on the rear guards & scuttle, while still water wet I was more than happy with the reflection in the finish. These cars never had the really deep mirror shine when they left the factory that some cars present with today. I may well use a finer grade for the final wet block prior to applying the polishing compound. Acrylic lacquer was the paint originally used & is still available here although I understand it may not be available in some American States. Cheers

Peter

Just curious, have you painted your bonnet yet? For me hat was the hard one ended up taking it to a pro after two failed attempts.

Did the pressure pak cans come from your paint supplier, knowing you, you probably imported them from Germany?

I got them from ACE Graeme. They colour matched the paint to my front apron. The bonnet was still in really good condition from the respray in 1971. Just has a couple of dents from chair legs courtesy of my mother in law who decided that was the best place to store her redundant lounge during the 40 years it spent in her garage. Importing spray cans is too time consuming as they can't travel by air. I had some vinyl returned from England by sea & it took just under twelve months to arrive! Cheers

The use of 2000 and 3000 paper is not unlike using different grades of rubbing compound.

I did what Peter did and used different grades of compound after the 1500, but if I did it again, I would probably go the 2000 and 3000 route and jump right to a finer compound.

Pics as promised. Finish is untouched & straight out of the can. Colour variation is due to the direction of the light as these pics were taken in the garage under flouros. There will of course still be some repainting required once the door is hung & the locks fitted. Probably another 3 fine coats. Cheers

This is what things looked like prior to the primer.

Both the A & B pillars have been bogged to ensure a nice fit with the door. The sheet metal overlapping seam that is evident in a couple of the pics is actually created with filler, (bog) to us Skips. Cheers

Ta Graeme. It's not a $20,000 paint job but then again I haven't got $20,000. The top coated area you can see in the pics cost me $36. Cheers
