MG TD TF 1500 - Hydraulic Press

Would a 6 ton hydraulic press suit any work I needed to perform on my car restoration.
JK Mazgaj

Depends on what you plan to do. I use mine to remove wheel bearings from rear axles, remove pulleys, etc. Useful to have, and not much money. Save up your scrap steel, as you will always need a piece of stock in an odd dimension and shape, to support parts in the press.

Hi

I have the Clarke 4 ton hydraulic press and never found it wanting on any job.

I have a 15 tons. But never used above 5 or 6.

6 is enough for most jobs.

They come in handy at times. Usually paid for the second time you us it. If you have space in your garage it would be a useful item and just not for the TD

I had to push an axle out of a wire wheel hub on an MGA once and it made a twenty ton press of mine grunt using no heat, with a little heat it would have come out easier, but don't like to put heat on axles. PJ

Thank you all. Helpful.

If you need to replace the swivel pins you will need a 20 ton press. I also agree with PJ on the use on wire wheel axle shafts.

Thought that the swivel pins (KingPins) had to be inline reamed to a slide type fit and held in place by a cotter?
On the point of axle from wire wheel the implication surely was that the splines had worn and therefore jammed making removal difficult.
JK Mazgaj

I believe you're describing TC king pins. As this is a TD/TF forum, that would not apply here since they are a completely different suspension design which shares no parts with TC. The TD and TF do not have king pins.
Steve Simmons

Whoops. Should have stopped and thought. Yes I'm in the process of working on a TC which clouded my thoughts. Having recently converted a LHD to RHD TF even that should have reminded me track rod ends!!! Yes they can be troublesome in removing. Poor maintenance can also lead to real problems as I suffered many years ago with a wheel disappearing off infront of me. What an admission.
