MG TD TF 1500 - I got my doors hung today

Got both doors in and the fit is nice. I did have to shim the lower hinge on the tub side of both doors to get them to not hit the threshold.

The wood in my doors is original and was in very good condition. I also filled all holes and redrilled them.

Shimming or bending is usually required so it sounds good.

Bruce,

I have no doubt you have already thought of these points below however I will assist with a couple of considerations re the dreaded door fits.

Firstly, you will need to allow for the plain Threshold Plates for adequate clearance at the botton of the door area. The repro. aluminium plates
are way too heavy in gauge and may make clearance an issue. Looks like you have 'nailed ' that issue.

Have you placed the striker plates and door locks in position as yet and set the striker wedge to the secondary lock ? The fitment of the rubber door buffers is also important.

The clearance between the bottom door skin area and the front quarter panel surfaces under the door will need careful checks as well.

The interior piping diameter may also affect clearances / adequate sealing between the interior panels and the doors/quarter panels.

Just ideas.

Congrats on your doors Bruce!

> Rob - thanks for the tips. I'm working on fitting doors in my TF.

How should the piping on the kick panels and door cards fit in the door opening? Should the piping on the two fit against each other?

Here is my right door with old door card temporarily nailed into position for test-fitting. Piping above the latch, but not below. New red ones will be fitted at completion. The latch and striker in the photo will be replaced with new reproductions from Moss. The quarter panel is not nailed to the pillar.

Is my latch/striker position OK? The latch is attached to the original mounting plate and original T-nuts, so the location can't be changed. The striker wedge is locked into the latch but not attached to the new pillar.

Thanks for your help.

I did not put the strikers in yet. I did use the striker area and the door lock area to align the up and down of the door.

I did put the original threshold plates on prior. They actually are going to polish up nicely.

I noted today that the bottom hinge on the passenger side that I had to shim to get the door off the threshold plate is binding. So I will have to decrease the shim and work it a bit more.

From what I have found, it looks like the car took a hit early in its life just behind the passenger door. It looks like it was repaired well. I found lead in the rear quarter panel behind the door, but when I checked all the angles against the driver side, everything is the same.

My alignment methode was to space the bottom so there is clearance and clamp the top of the door in place against the tub with the door lock and tub striker areas lined up. This allows me to look at where the hinges sit and what may be needed to get them correct.

Lonnie,

The exact position of the door lock and striker plate may vary slightly with each coach built csr.

The trick with the piping is to set it so the door, on closing, is not fouled in any way i.e. it should not be necessary to ever slam a door to close.

The piping can be within a few thou or just touching the door card on closure to the secondary door lock position. You may have to do a bit of trial and error on this fitment. Collingburn (UK) use to supply appropriate tacks
with pointed heads. However, I shorten a few down when test fitting the piping around the door in case you want to more easily remove the door card and/orfront quarter interior panel for re setting in relation to piping position etc.

I do get disappointed when I see a generally well restored T type to then find large gaps (interior wise) between the piping around the door opening. Seeing large areas of body paint and the aluminium threshold plate can detract from the interior fitment ! By the way, the Factory had very good fits also around the door.

The piping needs to go up to rest along side the ends of the dashboard.
Many retailers have too short an interior piping length to allow this original
feature to occur.

The smaller diameter TF crash pad piping also should go around the end of the crash pad and then return upward for a few centimetres toward the interior of the car.

Thanks Rob,

My TF had the "large gaps (interior wise) between the piping around the door opening." I've saved your reply to guide me when I install my interior … months from now.
