MG TD TF 1500 - Ignition Condensers (German)

I understand Bosch ignition condensers for VWs are made in Germany. I have two good condensers now, but I'm about to buy one of these and see if it will fit in our distributors with minimal modification and see how well it works and lasts. Has to beat this Chinese junk! PJ

Bosch VW condenser,

Paul,
I wouldn't be too sure about that!
The VW guys also complain about repro-rubbish!

Wow, I thought all Bosch equipment was made in Germany! Nothing's sacred anymore, is it. PJ

Not so Paul, After complaining to the head rep for NAPA over the phone about the problematic NAPA/Wix oil filters they sell for the MGB, his suggestion was to use the Bosch filters but he emphasized to be sure and use the one produced in Germany and not the lesser quality version produced in the states.

I hope I'm not hijacking this thread (if so, I'll start a new one) but I've always wondered why the condenser has to be located inside the distributor cap. It would be much easier to swap out if it were mounted on the outside and connected with an in-line bullet connector. Does anyone know why the condenser is mounted inside? Thanks. Jud

Jud, I think it's just an old tradition to put it in there for a complete setup. One of my old Case tractors has it mounted outside of the distributor, bolted to the block and your right, it's much easier to get to and replace. But saying that, I've never had to replace it! I guess it's made a little better than what were getting today. I think the problem with the ones today is, their using crushed up rice for an insulating material! PJ

Just a 22uf capacitor. My old Triumph motorcycles have them mounted way up away from the motor, one is under the seat.

Paul,
Just for info. Here's an original "Bosch" motorcycle condenser and if you zoom in on the photo it clearly states "Made in Turkey".

There are actually a lot of repro parts coming from Turkey nowadays. Most of the new repro crown wheel and pinions on the market are made there. I did a 3.9 CWP interchange on my Morris Minor last year and the CWP was from Turkey. A German company called Bastuck commissioned them and is supplying all the major suppliers with them. The CWP worked fine but was a very tight fit and the tolerances were not spot on. I ended up with actually no shims on the carrier side.
