MG TD TF 1500 - Improved water pump impeller
Here's my first attempt at producing a new water pump impeller for the original water pump. We intend to make it in brass eventually on a CNC but will do a 3D print off first on the test piece to measure the flow and checking the clearances. Regards Declan ![]() |

Is this a 3D rendition Declan? I've attached a pic of three original impellers for comparison. Apart from the two extra blades on your design the other notable difference is at the base of each blade. I guess this is also to improve water flow? Cheers Peter TD 5801 ![]() |

Peter, That is the first draft for the early impeller. The later one has a taper and a longer protrusion as far as I can see from the workshop manual. If I can get my hands on a later one or if somebody could provide accurate dimensions I can do it. Drawing the blades in 3D was not that easy. It took me quite a while to figure it out. FromTheFrameUp.com Doug has an upgraded water pump. It has 6 blades bronze also. # CS101. http://www.fromtheframeup.com/uploads/Cat_11_CS.pdf Has helped my TD in 110 degree summers. |

Rebuilt water pump with six blade brass piece. Not a engineer but if you tell me what you need me to measure I will attempt to do it. Joe ![]() |

Joe, I don't want to copy anybody else's ideas. I will try and get my hands on an original pump. I think my mate has a few as I would need to take the impeller off to measure it accurately. Thanks for the offer though. Regards Declan |

Declan the 3 impellers in my pic came from the 24433 - the later TD/TF pump, not the earlier 22838 which is the TC/TD (and I presume from the FTFU parts list, also the TB pump). I've rebuilt a few of the 24433's using a washing machine seal and the original impeller. Butch Taras has made a 6 blade impeller in bronze and it's available at a very reasonable price, but shipping from the States is expensive. Having stuff made on a CNC machine is pretty pricey also. Pretty sure Butch's impellers are cast but I've not actually seen one. Cheers

For those interested in this topic there are a couple of threads in the archive that provide a quite a lot of information, including some very good work done by Geoffrey Baker on an improved impeller design. In particular "Modern 6-vane impeller feasibility study?" and "Results of flow tests on 3 impellers" are worth a look. Regards, Michael |

Michael, I have read through those threads which are very interesting. I think Geoffrey Baker has done all the ground work so no point in me re-inventing the wheel. This is what the 3D print of my impeller looked like. Regards Declan ![]() |

There are existing sources for 6-vane impellers. I have a couple in my spares cabinet, bought from the late Phil Marino. Butch Taras took over manufacturing after Phil's passing. FTFU also sells them in a slightly different style although I don't know if they sell just the impeller. Most rebuilds using a new bronze impeller will also involve replacing the old spindle with a new stainless steel tapered spindle, which more securely holds the impeller and also includes a permanently sealed bearing that requires no further lubrication. The grease zerk becomes purely decorative. |
