MG TD TF 1500 - Installing freeze plugs, any sealant?

I know, they aren't really freeze plugs.... I'm about to whack a bunch in. I'm wondering if there's an belt and suspenders approach that will aid in avoiding weepage?

When the old ones are out, I use a rotary wire brush to clean the seats to bare metal leaving no residue. I wipe the seats with a very light coat of sealant with my finger, you don't need much, put the new plug in and using a 3/4 socket, smack it a couple times with a hammer. I don't use steel plugs, only Brass and not a hint of leaks. PJ

Google Loctite core plug sealant

Thanks Len, shoulda Googled it.

Found it... but I won't be getting any from these guys. LOL. Database problem, no doubt.

The price is correct, it is a large bottle !
Find an engine shop that will sell you a few drops!
Land Rover dealers may have it as well.

I have put a very thin bit of JB Weld on them before.

As per the original installation instructions, "Sealant is used in more severe applications,..."

I've used blue Loctite since it is handy but even cheap pipe dope would offer a touch of insurance.

Note the "whacking" procedure.

I used the "Din" variation for installation of Tom Lange's brass Welch plugs for best sealing and to retain the attractive convex profile. Coincidently, just got another set this week from Tom.

A compound called “Stag” has been recommended to me, can’t say if it’s any good. I’ve also heard that a fillet of JB Weld on top of the cures sealant can add a bit of extra insurance. I think I’ll need that when I try to plug these holes:

Definitely use JB Weld with those holes - I didn't the first time around and suffered the consequences.

JB weld. It is especially bad when the rear one pops out. Just my personal opinion: most of the blocks castings are now so rough and pitted from corrosion and age, the JB weld fills the pits as well as physically keeps them in place. George

Hi Paul,

Where do you get your brass core plugs from? I have never seen any for sale but did consider turning some up when I was rebuilding the engine but didn't have and suitable pieces of brass.

Cheers
