MG TD TF 1500 - Intake manifold gaskets TF

When I rebuilt my XPAG in mg TF I put a single plastic material gasket between the intake manifold and the carbs. This is as shown on the abingdon site, moss site and the WSM yet on another BBS site I have seen in a thread on heat soaking that suggested that there should be 2 gaskets used to prevent vapour lock. Has anyone done this?
Thanks

Hi Rod,

The material used is a black type 'plastic' which can replace the original
type fibre gasket. With TFs,the front Vokes Air Cleaner is quite closely
fitted near the right hand side engine panels so there can be limits on the gasket section(thickness).

I have used the black 'plastic' variety for many years with success. Also
have used the alternative, original type gasket. In owning TFs since 1976,
I must say I have never experienced vapour lock in any shape or form ! We do live in a pretty hot state temperature wise.

TF carbies are now well over 60 years old and often are not rebuilt or restored correctly. Additionally,POs have invariably changed or replaced parts on carbies which can also give rise to issues.

Rod,

Further to the above,I have just checked the section(thickness) of the black
gasket with a slide caliper gauge. It is 3/8" in thickness. I only use the one gasket for each AUC 6020 TF carby. Available from the usual MG suppliers.

Hope this assists.

Rod, I went through the exercise of having my H4 carbs for my TF rebuilt.

I sourced gaskets and the new phenolic block that goes between the carbs and the manifold.

I flatted the block on 150 grade paper on a glass sheet as there are molding marks in the face.

Initially all went together well, then I developed induction leaks, whistling noise which goes away when the engine is revved slightly.

I added a flat washer and spring washer under the brass nut, which was also new.

Induction noise is gone, however I will comment that the gaskets are very thin. I have sourced thicker gaskets from www.aptfast.com but have not fitted them yet.

The arrangement starting from the very clean manifold face is gasket, block, gasket, carb flange, flat washer, spring washer and then brass nut.

I did receive advice to wipe the face of the gasket lightly with oil, which I did heed.

The above did cure my induction leakage and I was able to get a very smoothly running engine.

Good luck on your venture.

Thanks folks! Concensus seems to be one “plastic” spacer with apropiate gaskets which is what i did already use.... engine runs beautifully. My concern was that when cowled was there a potential for vapour lock? Ill wait and see. Carbs I rebuilt!

Peter,
I have been noticing a whistling noise and have been unable to locate the source. I will do what you suggest. Thanks for the post.

Does it go way when you change RPM?

Squirt some WD-40 around the gaskets, if it disappears, you have found the problem. (I was chastised for using carby cleaner)
