MG TD TF 1500 - Is this a rare part?

I have several of these mounting brackets but they all need to be re-chromed. I'm thinking of cutting off the bottom leg and using two of them as inside seat belt anchors as described in Horst Schach's restoration manual. But I don't want to cut them up if they are hard to find or they might be useful to someone's restoration project.

Tim - As far as I know, the bracket you pictured, are not rare. That said, I don't think that I would use them for a seat belt anchor. Keep in mind that the human body can put an extreme force when coming to a sudden stop from even 30 mph. Look at the seat belt anchors and bolts in a modern vehicle and you will find that any brackets are a very strong grade steel and the bolts are all high strength. Cheers - Dave

In the absence of proper testing they need to be at least as thick as the metal fittings on a typical seatbelt, which I recall is 3mm or so.

I'm not so sure that bracket isn't from a TC. You might have a look at the vendors sites and see if they are available and the cost before you cut it up.

Looks like part no. 406-140 at Moss - it's the wheel arch bracket for the seatback adjuster.

Seems to me you could use any plate steel as a seat belt anchor, why waste a good MG part?

I wont be fitting lap sash seat belts because while the chassis is certainly an appropriate fixing point, the sheet metal of the wheel arch just isn't. Though it could be argued that an ineffective seat belt is better than none at all.. Cheers

Thanks everyone. Peter to your point, any force required to rip the mounting brackets out of attachment points will be subtracted for the force/momentum of your forward motion. As you say, better than nothing. After attending several defensive and high speed driving schools associated with my profession and having seen many accident scenes I will never drive a vehicle without lap/shoulder belts.

I can't tell for sure in the photo but I thought it might be for a TC which is slightly different that the one in the TD. Moss wants 100 bucks for a new one.

Search the archives for"roll bar" and you will find my solution, a completely removesble DOM tubing roll at with 3 point seatbelts all welded to chassis points.

TD seat bracket. Thin, stamped and flimsy. No way strong enough for a seatbelt anchor. George

George, you must be talking about another or an aftermarket part. The brackets I have are 2.70 mm thick. The same thickness Sachs calls for in his seat belt anchor design (page 154 - 155). Not flimsy at all.

LaVerne, the holes in the bracket line up perfectly with holes in the body of my TD. Not proof but lends evidence that they are for a TD. Also, there are no wear marks on that body location which would lead me to believe that they sat on top of the upholstery as shown in your picture of the TD.

It is not a TC seat bracket, see picture of one below (from Abingdon Spares). 99.999% sure it is from TD and I think same as TF. My recollection was that they were flimsy was of my originals which have been rechromed twice. I never measured thickness. Still no clue what kind of steel made from or if appropriate for any force. Ok TD bracket then...TF doesn't have any...just looked a lot like the one on Bill's TC and less like what I remember on the TD. But hey.... I'm old. In either case not really good for seat belt brackets I'd think.

Here are the brackets designs. I would use the seat brackets I have for the bracket on the left. As I said I would cut off the bottom leg of my existing brackets.

I forgot TFs have bucket seats, definitely not TF! I looked at mine last night and they are definitely thinner. George
