MG TD TF 1500 - Jeffers' Regulator Adjustment

It seems as if my 15 year old Bob Jeffers solid-state regulator needs a bit of tweaking. The output voltage seems to have drooped. There are two adjustments on the board. I recall a conversation with Bob a long time ago where he mentioned that the output voltage is adjustable. Anybody happen to know any more about the procedure? TIA, Bud

1)What is the value of the output voltage?

2) The output voltage will normally vary with temperature.
As we get into the warmer weather it will fall off.

That is normal.

Perhaps one adjustment is for the cut out, the other output? Maybe post a picture and maybe someone with electronic knowledge can help. How is the knee doing? George
George Butz

Haven't done any serious, quantitative, work on it yet, Jim. Seems to be providing about 12 volts on the battery when the ammeter is at zero. Reving up to over 2,000 shows about 13 volts. The battery's only about a month old. My gut feeling is that, after 15 years it's time for a tweak.

Knee's coming along, George. Still some pain. Daily trips to the Y (Mon-Fri). Concerned about some 'clunking' going on in the joint. Scheduled to see Dr. Erens in a couple of weeks.

Thanks, Dave. I'll contact Jerry. Bud

I've heard from Jerry and should be working on it later today. Here's an image of the workings of a bob Jeffers regulator, ca., 2005. Bud

The one Bob did for me about 10 years ago failed. I had a new microprocessor one built by Mecha-Tronics in North Carolina. Reasonable price, quick turn around. So far it works very well. info_please@vintagemecha-tronics.com (407) 765-2780.

I'll send a picture as soon as I figure out how to shrink it.

I manufactured my own using the "Holden Design" never had any trouble. Check my posts in the Archive.

Bob, did they save the design for you? It might be a nice resource to get on the TTalk page for other folks wanting another option/source.

Alex, there isn't a webpage about Bob Jeffers' solid-state regulator on Ttalk. The closest that there is is a link to a monthly column that I wrote for The British Marque in November 2005 entitled "A Pointless Tech Session" about solid-state devices in our cars.

I have no personal history with Vintage Mecha-Tronics devices, though I've known the Ahrendt's for quite a long time. I'm sure that their devices are top-of-the-line. Perhaps I can write something up about regulator options open to Tcar folks nowadays. How many of you are aware of Jerry Felper's British Auto Electric?

I'll see what I can do. Bud
