MG TD TF 1500 - Junk TF Tach Cable

I've determined the threads on one of the brass knurled knobs (photo) on the 40-inch TF cable is bad. To do this, I had to remove the bonnet and the battery to remove the cable from the car. Whew! The other end is good and screws into both the back of the tach and the reduction gear box okay.

Before I order a new tach cable (currently on sale at Moss), Does anyone have a junk cable lying around where I can salvage one of the knurled knobs? (It comes off after removing a C-clip). I'd like to use my original cable if possible. The patina on it looks great.

thanks,
Tyler

Tyler,

I am unaware of a support bracket, however I use black rubber tubing
on both the Tacho and Speedo cables where they rest on the Underdash Panel area. The type of tubing sleeve used is like the one used on 'Surfies' Roof Racks. As a result, with light greasing, there is virtually no sound/vibration from the cables. Of course, the tubing is not seen !

Tyler,
The thread on the cable connection knurled nut that goes onto the rev counter is M12x1. I have loads of them as I fit them on my speedo corrector gearboxes.
They are an off the shelf item.

I probably have and original one, will look today.

I do have one. What is your email address?
George Butz

Problem: I have one, but it is fastened to the end of the cable housing. It is not held on by the circlip- that only keeps the inner cable in place. It appears that the threaded nut is slipped over a brass sleeve with a flange, then a steel "shroud" is crimped over the assembly and the cable housing. No way to remove it non-destructively. Maybe Declan can shed some light on this?
George Butz

Tyler,
As George has mentioned the cables are normally crimped. If in your case the knurled nut can be removed non- destructively, it would be no problem to replace it with either an original or a modern one. The nuts that I use on my speedo corrector gearboxes are as shown below in the photo of a near completed gearbox. They are brass nickel plated with an octagon and I machine them to fit my gearbox output bearing flange. I would need to know the inside diameter to be sure it fits over the metal shroud on your cable.

Well, on closer examination, I found that removal of the C clip only allows removal of the inner cable, and not the brass knurled knob. And the threads on one end are definitely messed up. I guess I'll have to junk the whole thing and buy a new one.I don't know if a 12x1mm tap would clean up the threads or not. Not enough room to run it through far enough.

What a shame, the old one cleaned up pretty nicely.

Thanks again for all the responses.

Tyler,
If you use a bottom tap it might just work.
