MG TD TF 1500 - Just picked up the TD - few questions

I just picked up the 1951 TD (TD12524) and would like a little help with the engine number. The tregister says the engine number should be 1294 but the number on the engine tag and the block says 12942. Does the additional number (2) refer to the fact it is a later car and has an 8" clutch?

Photo attached

I'll post a picture of the car and the chassis number in other messages since I don't know how to post multiple photos.

JUST ABOVE THE BRASS OCTAGONAL PLETE YOU WILL FIND STAMPED INTO THE BLOCK CASTING THE ENGINE NUMBER.

TW, TD12524 is the car number and 12942 it number. Others on this forum can tell you whether that engine is original to that car ("matching numbers" bragging rights is about all that's worth).

Instead of putting each picture in a separate thread, just go to the bottom of the thread to "Your comment:" and type in a new post to the existing thread. With each new post you can attach ONE image provided the image file is less than 1meg. You can add as many new comments and new images to the existing thread as you want and that way your questions and other's responses stay together. Can you post a picture of the whole car? Then post a picture of the guarantee plate that will look like this (the important one is on the front of the tool box not easily seen in this image). Jud

Sorry TW, I hadn't read all your posts before I put this one up. Jud

The number in the block is the same as on the tag.

TW, to post multiple pictures on this post just go back to the main screen, open this same post a 2nd time and click the UPLOAD button a second time. Enter a comment such as "pic #2" then click Submit button. Not high tech, but it works!

Thanks for the posting tip Jud.

TW: Your engine number is appropriate for your car. Sounds like somebody dropped a digit when transferring the records to the database.

TW,
It seems like the color of your engine is BLUE,, Wou;dn't that indicate a replacement engine???

Steve, I have no idea I'm totally new to the TD arena. The bottom of the valve springs have blue paint over spray on them so I assume the engine has been repainted. I'm guessing the factory did not paint the engine with the valve springs in them. Or did they? Interestingly, the seats are about the same color as the engine.
TW Burchfield

Replacement, or repaired, painted and re-installed. I've painted engines some wild colors.

TW - when the Production Records were entered into a database, not enough spaces were allowed for every number to be included, so some engine numbers are truncated. You do have the original engine for your car.

Tom, thanks for the explanation.

Looks like your TD was build in late december 1951. Just about 52 cars from the end of the year for the production number. http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_production.htm#dates

Thanks Bruce. I'm having a difficult time determining the original color of the car. In some areas it appears an orangish red and others a maroon red. Overall the car is currently ivory/cream. I really like the ivory but I want the original color on the car.
TW Burchfield

There are a few areas that sometimes still have original paint on them. It depends upon how thorough a repaint was. One is the front face of the fuel tank. Another is under the various i.d. plates on the firewall. Also, under the beading where the fenders are attached. Bud
